The John Gosden-trained Tawleed (2 c Exceed And Excel - Terhaab by Elusive Quality) shed his maiden status at the third time of asking when proving too strong for his rivals in the British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Stakes (7f) at Leicester on Monday.

The son of Darley shuttler Exceed And Excel (Danehill) came into the race off the back two good performances, coming second at Goodwood on debut, before occupying that same position at York on August 21.

Bred and raced by Shadwell Stud, Tawleed pulled clear in the closing stages to beat  Underwater Attack (Dawn Approach) by two and three-quarter lengths. Bois De Norton (Garswood) finished another length further away in third.

The colt is out of the winning Elusive Quality (Gone West) mare Terhaab and is bred on a cross that has proved successful, with daughters of Elusive Quality producing eight stakes winners when bred to Exceed And Excel, headed by multiple Group 1 winner Guelph.

Terhaab herself is out of unraced Dayjur (Danzig) mare Star Of Paris, making her a sister to Prix Morny (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Elusive City (Elusive Quality) and Listed scorer Parisian Affair (Mr. Greeley), who in produced Crimson China (Giant's Causeway)

The colt’s third dam is Listed winner Liturgism (Native Charger) - the dam of Listed winner Millions (Dehere).

Further back this is the family of Grade 1 winner Lukes Alley (Flower Alley) and Listed-winning pair Vaulcluse (A.P. Indy) and Arrifana (Curlin).

Exceed And Excel's progeny is headed by 15 top-flight winners including Microphone, who is standing his first season alongside his sire at Darley's Kelvinside in 2020, while fellow elite level winner Exceedance has joined the Vinery Stud roster this spring. Exceed And Excel himself is standing for $132,000 (inc GST) at Kelvinside.
