Dermot Weld’s decision to run talented filly Tarnawa (4 f ex Tarana by Cape Cross) in the Prix Vermeille (Gr 1, 2400m) at Longchamp proved an inspired one, as she got the better of her rivals and in the process became the 26th elite level winner for her late sire Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway).

The four-year-old came into the race off the back of a victory in the Give Thanks Stakes (Gr 3, 1m4f) and she had no issues with the step up in class, beating Raabihah (Sea The Stars) by a decisive three lengths, while Dame Malliot (Champs Elysees) was another short-head in third.

Bred and raced by the Aga Khan, Tarnawa is out of dual Listed winner Tarana (Cape Cross).

Tarana herself is a daughter of fellow Listed scorer Tarakala (Dr Fong), who produced a further three winners.

Shamardal, dual Champion racehorse and a leading light on the Darley stallion roster for well over 10 years, was euthanised at Kildangan Stud earlier this year as a result of health issues.

The stallion is represented in Australia by his sire son Puissance De Lune, who stands at Swettenham Stud for a fee of $18,000 (plus GST), while Blue Point is covering his first book of mares at Darley’s Northwood Park base for a fee of $44,000 (inc GST).
