The unmatched Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) sired an incredible Group 1 double on Sunday when his son Mogul (3 c ex Shastye by Danehill) emulated his brother Japan in the Grand Prix De Paris (Gr 1, 2400m) at Longchamp, while at the Curragh his daughter Shale (2 f ex Homecoming Queen by Holy Roman Emperor) was victorious in the Moyglare Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 7f), which saw the stallion’s total top-flight haul swell to an incredible 89.

The first of the impressive double was kicked off by Mogul, who finally started fulfilling his immense potential in Grand Prix De Paris.

A winner of the Champions Juvenile Stakes (Gr 2, 1m) last year, Mogul was purchased by M V Magnier for a hefty 3,500,000gns at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale from the Newsells Park Stud draft in 2018 and he came into his Classic year with a lofty reputation to uphold.

However he had somewhat disappointed in his first two starts as a three-year-old, finishing fourth in the King Edward VII Stakes (Gr 2, 1m4f) at Royal Ascot, before running sixth in The Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) in July.

He finally got his name on the board this season when taking out the Gordon Stakes (Gr 3, 1m4f) at Glorious Goodwood on July 30 and he was last seen running third behind Pyledriver (Harbour Watch) in the Great Voltigeur Stakes (Gr 2, 1m4f) in August.

As the field entered the straight Mogul’s rivals were clearly feeling the pitch, but Pierre-Charles Boudot sat motionless on the son of Galileo (Sadler’s Wells). When he pushed the button on the colt, he scooted clear to beat German Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner In Swoop (Alderflug) by two and a half lengths. Gold Trip (Outstrip) was another short-head away in third, while Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) winner Serpentine (Galileo) was a further length and three-quarters further back in third.

Mogul hails from a blue-blood family, being out of winning and Listed-placed Danehill (Danzig) mare Shastye, making him a brother to the aforementioned dual Group 1 winner Japan, who won the same Group 1 last year, while he is also a brother to Group 2 winner Secret Gesture and Group 3 scorer Sir Isaac Newton and a half-brother to Australian Listed scorer Maurus (Medicean).

Shastye herself is out of Group 2 winner Saganeca (Sagaca), making her a half-sister to 1998 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Sagamix (Linamix) and other top-flight scorers Sagacity (Highest Honor) and Sageburg (Johannesburg).

Newsells Park will offer a sister to Mogul at Book 1 of this year’s Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, the filly will go through the ring as Lot 436

Mogul is one of 327 stakes winners for the peerless Coolmore Stud-based sire Galileo and the 16th Group 1 winner bred on the Galileo / Danehill (Danzig) cross, while daughters of the son of Danzig (Northern Dancer) when mated to Galileo have produced 56 stakes winners in total.

Later on in the afternoon, it was a family affair in the Moyglare Stud Stakes as the Donnacha O’Brien-trained Shale beat Pretty Gorgeous (Lawman) - who is trained by his older brother Joseph - by three-quarters of a length and in so doing reversing the form of Debutante Stakes (Gr 2, 7f). Oodnadatta (Australia) was another length and three-quarters away in third.

The daughter of Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) is out 2012 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) winner Homecoming Queen (Holy Roman Emperor) who has produced three other winners including the stakes-placed pair First Of Spring (Galileo) and Berkeley Square (Galileo).

Shale’s second dam is Lagrion (Diesis) who produced seven winners headed by multiple Group 1 winner and sire Dylan Thomas (Danehill) and his Group 1 winning half-sister Queen’s Logic (Grand Lodge) who is the grandam of Queen Kindly (Frankel).

Legion also produced the Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f) runner-up Remember When (Danehill Dancer) who in turn produced this year’s Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) winner Serpentine (Galileo) as well as Group winners Wedding Vow (Galileo), Bye Bye Baby (Galileo) and Beacon Rock (Galileo).

Shale’s victory also provided former shuttler Holy Roman Emperor with his fourth top-flight winner as a broodmare sire, joining Newspaperofrecord (Lope De Vega), Johannes Vemeer (Galileo) and Verbal Dexterity (Vocalised).

Galileo, who has stood for a private fee since 2008, and he will be represented in Australia this season by his sire sons Adelaide, Churchill and Highland Reel.
