Tally Ho Stud-based Mehmas (Acclamation) extended his lead in the European first season season sires table on Saturday when his son Supremacy (2 c ex Triggers Broom by Arcano) took out the Middle Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) at Newmarket to become his sires first Group 1 winner.

Jumping well from the gates, Supremacy went to the front of the eight-runner field. He was asked to quicken with two furlongs left to run, racing close to the stand side rail, and held off the challenge of Lucky Vega (Lope De Vega) to score a game half length victory. Lucky Vega finished second with Minzaal (Mehmas), who was ridden from off the pace, another two and a quarter lengths back in third.

"I'm thrilled to bits, as anybody would be, and it was an amazing performance considering the strength in depth of the race,” said winning trainer Clive Cox.

"Any Group 1 is good, but that appeared as strong as ever. We've thought the world of him and he's trained really well, but the worry was the ground.

"I walked it on Tuesday morning and it was lightning quick, but we've had 22mm in the meantime. Our concern was if it went soft because it's unknown territory for him.

"I think he's an out-and-out sprinter and don't see why we should stretch him out. I know the family well - it's the same as Harry Angel's - and there's an awful lot of speed in it.

"He's a real speedball, very talented, and has got a good mind. I'm pleased to have him and Jason is enjoying it too; horses of this calibre are just what we're after."

Breaking his maiden at his second start at Windsor over six furlongs in July Supremacy then captured the Richmond Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at Goodwood by four lengths later that month. He was bought by his trainer for £65,000 at last year’s Goffs UK Doncaster Premier Yearling Sale and is one of three winners and the first stakes winner out of the placed Arcano (Oasis Dream) mare Triggers Broom who is herself out of Great Joy (Grand Lodge) making her a half-sister to two-time Hong Kong Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Xtension (Xaar).

Great Joy is also the grandam of dual Group 1 winner Harry Angel (Dark Angel) who is standing at Darley’s Kelvinside farm for a fee of $16,500 (inc GST) this season).

Owenstown Stud will offer a Cotai Glory (Exceed And Excel) half-brother to Supremacy at the forthcoming Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. The colt is catalogued as Lot 500
