Darley stallion Exceed And Excel (Danehill) sired his 178th stakes winner on Friday night as his son Harry’s Bar (5 g ex Firenze by Efisio) stayed on strongly to win the Belgrave Stakes at Dundalk.

On his first start for Adrian McGuiness, having been sold by former trainer James Fanshawe for 75,000gns at last month’s Tattersalls Horses In Training Sale, he showed tremendous guts to beat stablemate Laugh A Minute (Mayson) by a neck. Inflection Point (Invincible Spirit) was another three-quarters of a length further away in third.

The gelding becomes the first stakes winner out of Firenze (Efisio), who is herself a sister to July Cup (Gr 1, 6f) winner Frizzante, while she is a half-sister to Listed winner Zidane (Danzero).

Frizzante herself is a grandam of Group 2 winner Tropbeau (Showcasing), while this is also the same family as Grade 1 winner Donna Viola (Be My Chief).

Exceed And Excel's progeny is headed by 16 top-flight winners including Microphone, who is standing his first season alongside his sire at Darley's Kelvinside in 2020, while fellow elite level winner Exceedance has joined the Vinery Stud roster this spring. Exceed And Excel himself is standing for $132,000 (inc GST) at Kelvinside.
