Summerghand turns over Oxted in Abernant Stakes
Former Patinack Stud shuttler Lope De Vega (Shamardal) was handed his 79th stakes winner on Thursday when the David O’Meara-trained Summerghand (7 g ex Kate The Great by Xaar) denied Group 1 winner Oxted (Mayson) back-to-back victories in the Abernant Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at Newmarket.
The seven-year-old gelding came into the Group 3 off the back of a victory in the All-Weather Sprint Championships Stakes (6f) and he finished strongly to beat last year’s July Cup (Gr 1, 6f) winner Oxted by three-quarters of a length. Emaraaty Ana (Shamardal) was a further head away in third.
Summerghand was purchased by Rabbah Bloodstock for 250,000gns at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in 2015 and he is out of winning Xaar (Zafonic) mare Kate The Great, making him a half-brother to Group 3 winner Easter Impact (Bahamian Bounty) and Listed winner Miss Katie Mae (Dark Angel).
Kate The Great herself is a half-sister to the dam of Listed winner Another Touch (Arcano).
Lope De Vega’s 79 stakes winners are headed by 12 Group 1 winners, including Australian top-flight winners Santa Ana Lane, Vega Magic and Gytrash. He is represented in the southern hemisphere by Belardo, who shuttles to Haunui Farm in New Zealand.
