Master Of The Seas lands Craven Stakes

Son of Dubawi leads home Godolphin quinella in Newmarket Group 3

MASTER OF THE SEAS.
MASTER OF THE SEAS.

Master Of The Seas (3 c Dubawi - Firth Of Lorne by Danehill) led home a quinella for trainer Charlie Appleby and Godolphin as he added a second Group race to his record in the Craven Stakes (Gr 3, 1m) at Newmarket on Thursday and now looks set to head to the 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) on May 1.

A winner of the Superlative Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) as a two-year-old in July, Master Of The Seas came into the race off the back of second place finish in the Meydan Classic Stakes (Listed, 1600m) on February 25.

Ridden by William Buick, the colt overcame trouble in running to beat La Barrosa (Lope De Vega) by three-quarters of a length, while Mystery Smiles (Mehmas) was another three lengths away in third.

Appleby - who was celebrating his second win in the Group 3, having landed it with subsequent Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) winner Masar (New Approach) in 2018 - and the trainer confirmed Master Of The Seas would return to Newmarket next month for the 2,000 Guineas.

“I just wanted to give him some room so he could run home and go through the gears which he did,” Appleby told ITV Racing. “It threatened to be a very messy race but the two class horses came through. This will have done this horse the world of good. He was relaxed and did everything right.

"I think he’s a Guineas horse. Only the very good ones manage to quicken down the Dip and when they hit the rising ground they go again and that’s what this fella did. When he ran in Dubai he was a bit of a mess and I’m just glad to get him back on track.

“I wasn’t worried when he got beat in Meydan because our eyes were on Europe. Our plan didn't actually work out as we wanted it today. I was hoping La Barrosa was going to break a bit better and get closer to the front to take everybody up the middle.”

The son of Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) is out of Listed winner and Group 1-placed Danehill (Danzig) mare Firth Of Lorne, making him a half-brother to UAE Oaks (Gr 3, 1900m) winner Falls Of Lora (Street Cry), the dam of last weekend’s Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Cascadian (New Approach).

Firth Of Lorne is also the dam of Listed scorers Latharnach (Iffraaj) and Etive (Elusive Quality).

The colt’s second dam is Group 3 winner Kerrera (Diesis), who finished second in the 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m), and she produced June Moon (Sadler’s Wells) - the dam of Group 2-winning pair Dupont (Zafonic) and Pacino (Zafonic) and Listed winner Zachariah (Zafonic). Kerrera is also the grandam of Listed winner Ceremonial Jade (Jade Robbery).

Dubawi has sired 202 stakes winners overall and this latest win signs off a good few days for the Darley stallion, having added two in stakes winners to his record this week, with Master Of The Seas’ stablemate Highland Avenue having landed the Feilden Stakes (Listed, 1m1f) on Tuesday, while his other son My Oberon broke through for his first stakes victory in the Earl Of Sefton Stakes (Gr 3, 1m1f) at Newmarket on Wednesday.

Dubawi has sired 21 stakes winners in Australia, headed by Group 1-winning quartet; Srikandi, Secret Admirer, Tiger Tess, Shamal Wind and Benbatl.
