Poetic Flare emulates sire and damsire with 2,000 Guineas victory
In 2013 Jim Bolger and Kevin Manning teamed up to win the 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) at Newmarket with Dawn Approach (New Approach), fast-forward to 2021 and the trainer and jockey were handed their second victory in the time-honoured Classic, when Dawn Approach’s son Poetic Flare (3 c ex Maria Lee by Rock Of Gibraltar) produced a brave performance to emulate his sire in the Group 1 on Saturday.

Last seen winning the Two Thousand Guineas Trial (Listed, 7f) at Leopardstown on April 11, the three-year-old colt showed a good burst of speed to beat last start Craven Stakes (Gr 3, 1m) winner Master Of The Seas (Dubawi) by a short-head. Lucky Vega (Lope De Vega) - who is raced by Yulong’s Zhang Yuesheng - was another neck away in third.

Like his father Poetic Flare was bred by Bolger and Manning was quick to heap praise on the trainer, who is also the jockey’s father in law.

"It's a great training performance, he's done nothing wrong all along this horse and was impressive in the Guineas trial at Leopardstown. I knew he'd come forward from then and I made no secret that I fancied him.

"He's just a proper horse, I really thought that he would win today. The plan was always to have this guy come here and thankfully it's worked out."

The colt showed his class as a two-year-old, winning on debut at Naas in March and after disappointing in the Dewhurst Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) at Newmarket, he bounced back to land the Killavullan Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) on his final start of his juvenile career.

Poetic Glare is out of Maria Lee and she is herself by Rock Of Gibraltar (Danehill), who landed the 2,000 Guineas in 2002. Poetic Flare is a three-quarters brother to Glamorous Approach (New Approach).

The colt’s third dam is Saviour (Majestic Light), who in turn produced Listed winner Graduated (Royal Academy) and Speirbhean (Danehill) - the dam of dual Group 1 winner and successful sire Teofilo (Galileo), Group 2 scorer Poetic Charm (Dubawi) and Bean Feasa (Dubawi).

Dawn Approach - who has sired 14 stakes winners overall - shuttled to Australia for five seasons and he has sired six stakes winners in the country, headed by Group 3-winning trio Dawn Passage, Dawn Patrol and this season’s Kindergarten Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) winner Paulele.

The stallion formerly stood at Darley’s Kildangan base in Ireland and he now stands at Bolger’s Redmondstown Stud in Ireland.

13th stakes winner for Toronado
Swettenham Stud shuttler Toronado (High Chaparral) was handed his 13th stakes winner courtesy of Illykato’s (3 f ex Key Light by Acclamation) win in the Conqueror Fillies’ Stakes (Listed, 1m) at Goodwood on Saturday. Last seen finishing 13th behind Alcohol Free (No Nay Never) in the Fred Darling Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at Newbury on April 18, the Mick Channon-trained filly finished strongly to gain the lead in the shadow of the winning post, beating Agincourt (Declaration Of War) by a nose. The son of High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells) has sired seven stakes winners in Australia this season, headlined by Masked Crusader, who handed him a first Group 1 winner when he landed the William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in March. Toronado will stand at Swettenham Stud for an increased fee of $49,500 (inc GST) in 2021, having stood last season for $27,500 (inc GST).

Darley’s star stallion Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) was handed his 132nd Group winner on Saturday when the Charlie Appleby-trained Lazuli (4 g ex Floristry by Fasliyev) took out the Palace House Stakes (Gr 3, 5f) at Newmarket. The four-year-old gelding landed the Scurry Stakes (Listed, 5f) at Sandown last season and he defeated Came From The Dark (Dark Angel) by a neck. Dubawi became the first British stallion to sire 200 stakes winners when Philomene landed the Prix Penelope (Gr 3, 2100m) at Saint-Cloud earlier in the season and his number of black-type winners has since climbed to 203.
