Fourth Group 1 winner Zoffany
Mother Earth hands Aidan O’Brien his seventh win in the 1,000 Guineas

Mother Earth (3 f ex Many Colours by Green Desert) handed trainer Aidan O’Brien his seventh victory in the 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) when she outshone her rivals in the Group 1 on Sunday and in the process giving the late Coolmore Stud stallion Zoffany (Dansili) this fourth Group 1 winner.

Ridden by Frankie Dettori, the filly came into the the Group 1 having finished second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (Gr 1, 1m) at Keeneland in November and she stayed on well to beat Saffron Beach (New Bay) by a length, while Fev Rover (Gutaifan) was another neck away in third. The winner’s well-backed stablemate Santa Barbara (Camelot) finished another nose away in fourth.

“Mother Earth is a very good filly and always was. It was unfair to the favourite (Santa Barbara) to come but we had to come with the view to coming back over here for the Oaks,” said O’Brien.

“Santa Barbara is only a baby and Ryan said that he’d liked to have waited longer but he saw Frankie coming down his outside and he had to come then and she was just green in the dip, but after having one easy run it was a great run."

Meanwhile, Dettori added: "We can still do it. It's my twentieth Classic so I am delighted to win it in my hometown of Newmarket.

"Aidan gave me a lot of confidence. He told me to ride her calmly and that she would come home good. I followed Ryan and I kicked at the top of the hill because I knew she'd get home. And she did.

"I was a bit deflated yesterday with Battleground but when you ride in the Classics for Coolmore on the second or third string you have a live chance and in the back of mind I thought anything is possible."

Bred by Grenane House Stud, Mother Earth was bought for €150,000 by MV Magnier at the 2019 Goffs Orby Yearling Sale from the Whitehall Stud draft and she becomes the fourth winner for the Listed-winning Green Desert (Danzig) mare Many Colours, making the filly a half-sister to Premio Dormello (Gr 2, 1600m) winner Night Colours (Night Of Thunder).

The filly’s second dam is First Of Many (Darshaan) and she produced six winners and is herself a half-sister to Listed winner Patience Alexander (Kodiac).

This is also the family of the 2014 Queen Mary Stakes (Gr 2, 5f) winner Anthem Alexander (Starspangledbanner) and her Group 3-winning half-brother and now sire Dandy Man (Mozart).

The filly is one of three stakes winners bred on the Zoffany / Green Desert cross, joining Group 2 winner Illuminate.

Zoffany shuttled to Australia for four seasons between 2012 and 2015 and Mother Earth joins Albinga, Thunder Moon and Ventura Storm as the stallion’s other top-flight winners. The son of Dansili (Danehill) died at Coolmore in January.
