The Jean-Claude Rouget-trained Makaloun (3 c Bated Breath - Makana, by Dalakhani) got his three-year-old year off to the best possible start when he landed the Prix De Guiche (Gr 3, 1800m) at Chantilly on Tuesday.

A winner of four of his five juvenile starts, headed by a victory in the Prix de Conde (Gr 3, 1800m), while he also finished third in the Criterium de Saint-Cloud (Gr 1, 2000m) on his final start as a two-year-old on October 24.

Bred and owned by the Aga Khan, Makaloun stayed on strongly to beat Millebosc (Le Havre) by half a length. Fort Payne (Rio De La Plata) was another short-neck away in third.

The son of Bated Breath (Dansili) is one of three winners out of the dual-winning Dalakhani (Darshaan) mare Makana, who is herself a half-sister to Listed winner Markazi (Dark Angel).

Further back this is the same pedigree as Group 3 scorers Masslama (No Pass No Sale) and Makakim (Blushing Groom) as well as Listed-winning pair Massigann (Selkirk) and Manzila (Cadeaux Genereux).

Makaloun is one of 17 stakes winners for the Juddmonte Farm stallion and they are headed by Grade 1 winner Viadera.

Earlier on in the afternoon at Chantilly, the Pascal Bary-trained Tahlie (3 f ex Tianshan by Lahint) took out the Prix Des Lilas (Listed, 1600m) and in the process became Rio De La Plata’s (Rahy) eighth stakes winner.

Tahlie defeated Frenchette (The Gurkha) by a length and a quarter, while Lady Day (Motivator) was another head away in third.
