Juddmonte Farms’ superstar sire Frankel (Galileo) chalked up his 65th stakes winner as his son Hurricane Lane (3 c ex Gale Force by Shirocco) announced himself as a legitimate candidate for the Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) at Epsom next month when he retained his unblemished record in the Dante Stakes (Gr 3, 1m2.5f) at York on Thursday.

Trained by Charlie Appleby and raced by Godolphin, the three-year-old colt stayed on well inside the closing stages to soar past longtime leader Roman Empire (Galileo) and post a three-quarter length victory over Megallan (Kingman). High Definition, who was sent off the 13/8 favourite, finished another length and a quarter further back in third, while his stablemate Roman Empire kept on well to finish two and a quarter lengths away in fourth.

"The Dante is always a good trial and this year's had plenty of quality in it, it's not very often that it's a race with a Group 1 winner from the year before in it,” said winning jockey William Buick.

"Everything he does, he does it right. He went through the gears nicely and when he got company he battled back, which he did at Newbury last time as well.

"I can't really see what more you could ask of him, he's answered every single call.

"He'll have to step up again, we all know that and it's never an easy task, but at least he's got the experience now and he'll get the mile and a half."

The colt was purchased by his owners for 200,000gns at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and he is out of Listed-winning Shirocco (Monsun) mare Gale Force, making him a brother to Listed-placed filly Frankel’s Storm.

Gale Force herself is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Seal Of Approval (Authorized), while further afield this is the same family as Group 3 winners Hamairi (Spectrum), Hunaina (Tamayuz) and Hamariyna (Sea The Moon) as well as Listed scorer Hanabad (Cadeaux Genereux).

Frankel’s progeny is headed by 13 elite level winners and has sired seven stakes winners in Australia headed by Group 1-winning duo Hungry Heart and Mirage Dancer.
