The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Queen Power (5 m ex Princess Serena by Unbridled's Song) snapped a long losing run that stretched back to her victory in the 2019 edition of the Fillies' Trial Stakes (Listed, 1m2f) when she took out the Middleton Fillies’ Stakes (Gr 2, 1m2.5f) at York on Thursday and in the process handed late Darley Stud-based sire Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway) with his 79th Group winner.

The five-year-old mare was last seen finishing second for the second consecutive year in the Dahlia Stakes (Gr 2, 9f) at Newmarket on May 2 and she went one better on Thursday when defeating Chamade (Sepoy) by an emphatic eight lengths, while Cabaletta (Mastercraftsman) was a further four and a half lengths away in third.

The mare was purchased by SackvilleDonald for 500,000gns at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and she is out of winning Unbridled’s Song (Unbridled) mare Princess Serena, making her a sister to dual Australian Group 2 scorer and now Swettenham Stud-based sire Puissance De Lune, while she is also a three-quarter-sister to Group 1 winner Zabeel Prince (Lope De Vega).

Princess Serena is also the grandam of dual Group 1 winner Rizeena (Iffraaj) and Group 2 scorer Summer Romance (Kingman).

The mare’s third dam is Grade 2 winner Doubles Partner (Rock Hard Ten) and Listed winner Stormy Venus (Stormy Atlantic), who in turn produced Grade 2 winner Don Americo (Mr Greeley).

Shamardal has sired 154 stakes winners in total, headed by 26 elite level winners including Blue Point and Earthlight who will stand at Darley’s Northwood Park for $44,000 (inc GST) and $22,000 (inc GST) respectively, while Pinatubo will command a fee of $22,000 (inc GST) at Kelvinside. Meanwhile, Queen Power’s aforementioned brother Puissance De Lune will stand the 2021 breeding season for a fee of $18,000 (plus GST) at Swettenham Stud in Victoria.
