Lone Eagle advertises Derby credentials
The Ballylinch Stud and Aquis Farm-owned colt Lone Eagle (3 c ex Modernstone by Duke Of Marmalade) advertised his Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) credentials when he landed the Cocked Hat Stakes (Listed, 1m3f) at Goodwood on Friday.
The son of Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) landed the Zetland Stakes (Gr 3, 1m2f) at Newmarket on October 10 and opened his three-year-old account when running fourth in the Sandown Classic Trial Stakes (Gr 3, 1m2f) on April 23.
The Martyn Meade-trained Lone Eagle pulled clear in the final stages to beat Yibir (Dubawi) by four lengths, while Gentleman Joe (Authorized) was another six and a half lengths back in third.
Purchased by Aquis Farm for 500,000gns at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale from the Ballylinch Stud - who still remain in the ownership - the colt is out of Listed-winning mare Modernstone (Duke Of Marmalade) and she is a half-sister to Listed winner Chasing Stars (Observatory).
The colt’s third dam is Modena (Roberto), whose 11 runners to race were all winners, headed by dual Group 1 winner Elmaamul (Diesis), Group 2 winner Manifest (Rainbow Quest), Group 3-winning duo Modern Day (Dayjur) and Modernise (Known Fact) and Listed winner High Walden (El Gran Senor).
Modena is also the dam of dual Group 1-winning champion Reams Of Verse (Nureyev), the dam of Grade 3 winner Eagle Poise (Empire Maker), who in turn produced Listed scorer Many Volumes (Chester House) - the grandam of Celebration Mile (Gr 2, 1m) winner Zacinto (Dansili) and he stands at Valachi Downs in New Zealand.
Further back this is same family as 2015 Herbert Power Stakes (Gr 2, 2400m) winner Amralah (Teofilo), 2014 Gosford Cup (Listed, 2100m) winner Midsummer Sun (Monsun) and New Zealand Group 2 winner and Group 1-placed Two Illicit (Jimmy Choux).
Galileo’s progeny is headed by 89 Group 1 winners and they include Adelaide and Churchill, who both stand at Coolmore Stud and Highland Reel, who shuttles to Swettenham Stud in Victoria.
