70th stakes winner and 14th Group One winner for Juddmonte’s son of Galileo
The Charlie Appleby-trained and Adam Kirby-ridden Adayar (3 c ex Anna Salai by Dubawi) upset more fanciled rivals in Saturday’s Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) at Epsom becoming the first winner in the race for his sire Frankel (Galileo), his 14th Group 1 winner and his 70th stakes winner overall.
Starting at odds of 16-1 Adayar pulled away in the closing stages to put four and a half lengths between him and Mojo Star (Sea The Stars) with the winner’s stablemate Hurricane Lane (Frankel) another three and a quarter lengths back in third.
“I’m delighted for His Highness Sheikh Mohammed and Team Godolphin, being a home-bred as well and Frankel having his first Derby winner. I’m delighted for Adam. He knows him as well as anyone as he broke all three of the runners in,” said Appleby.
“To win the way he has done, he’s stamped his authority there among the three-year-old middle-distance horses. We’ll just take a breath, let the dust settle and regroup. It will be interesting to see what the boys say about the other pair (Hurricane Run and One Ruler, who was sixth) as well.
“I had a conversation with His Highness on Wednesday and I sort of put it up there that Adayar would be more of a staying horse and, thankfully, he put me straight back where I should be and said ‘no Charlie, there’s only one Derby and you need to stay in the Derby’.”
Bred by Godolphin, Adayar came into Saturday’s race having finished second in the Derby Trial (Listed, 1m3.5f) at Lingfield last month. He is the only winner out of Group 3 winner Anna Salai (Dubawi) who finished second in the Irish 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m).
His second dam is Anna Palariva (Caerleon) who is also the dam of Listed winning pair Iguazu Falls (Pivotal) and Advice (Seeking The Gold). This is also the family of Widden Stud Victoria shuttler National Defense (Invincible Spirit).
The Juddmonte Farm-based Frankel has sired 25 winners from 36 runners in Australia and seven stakes winners including Group 1 winning pair Hungry Heart and Mirage Dancer.
