We take a look at the stallions who have sired stakes winners over the five days of Royal Ascot
A total of 12 stallions sired stakes winners over the five days of the 2021 Royal Ascot meeting.
Dawn Approach, Galileo, Kingman, Mayson and Teofilo all sired Group 1 winners while Frankel and Dubawi were the only stallions to have two stakes winners over the meeting. FIrst season sires Profitable and Ardad also sired their first stakes winners.
Adlerflug
Alenquer - King Edward VII Stakes (Gr 2, 1m4f)
The William Haggas-trained Alenquer (3 c ex Wild Blossom by Areion) notched up his second Group victory in the King Edward VII Stakes (Gr 2, 1m4f). A winner of the Classic Trial (Gr 3, 1m2f) at Sandown on April 23, Alenquer raced towards the rear of the field and then ran on well to score a length and a half victory under Tom Marqand. The Sir Mark Todd-trained and Sir Peter Vela-raced Tasman Bay (Le Havre) finished in second.
Alenquer is one of 17 stakes winners by Adlerflug (In The Wings) and is the only winner out of Wild Blossom (Areion). He was bought for €18,000 at the 2019 Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale before being sold for 80,000gns to Armando Duarte at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale the following year.
Adlerflug was based at Gestut Schlenderhan but died earlier this year. His stakes winners include five Group 1 winners in Iquitos, Ito, In Swoop, Alcazar and Torquator Tasso.
Ardad
Perfect Power - Norfolk Stakes (Gr 2, 5f)
Thursday’s opening race was the Norfolk Stakes (Gr 2, 5f) which went the way of 14-1 shot Perfect Power (2 c ex Sagely by Frozen Power) who provided his first season sire Ardad (Kodiac) with his first stakes winner.
Ardad has sired 12 winners so far in his first crop that also includes Vintage Clarets who finished third in the Coventry Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) on Tuesday. Ardad heads the leading first season sires table in Europe by winners.
Australia
Point Lonsdale - Chesham Stakes (Listed, 7f)
Point Lonsdale (2 c ex Sweepstake by Acclamation) became the 19th stakes winner for Coolmore Stud’s Australia (Galileo) when he won the Chesham Stakes (Listed, 7f).
Trained by Aidan O’Brien, Point Lonsdale is now unbeaten in two career starts having broken his maiden at the Curragh over seven furlongs on June 2. On Saturday under Ryan Moore, Point Lonsdale kept on well in the closing stages and beat HM The Queen-raced Reach For The Moon (Sea The Stars) by a half length.
Australia has sired three Group 1 winners in Mare Australis, Galileo Chrome and Order Of Australia and his oldest crop are four-year-olds.
Bobby’s Kitten
Sandrine - Albany Stakes (Gr 3, 6f)
The Kirsten Rausing homebred Sandrine (2 f ex Seychelloise by Pivotal) provided one-time Twin Hills shuttler Bobby’s Kitten (Kitten’s Joy) with his first stakes winner when she won Friday’s Albany Stakes (Gr 3, 6f).
Trained by Andrew Balding, Sandrine remains unbeaten in two career starts after scoring an impressive length and a quarter victory over Hello You (Invincible Spirit). She is one of two winners out of four-time winner Seychelloise (Pivotal) who is herself out of Group 3 winner Starlit Sands (Oasis Dream).
Bobby’s Kitten, who is based at Rausing’s Lanwades Stud in Newmarket, has two crops of racing age and is the sire of 22 winners to date that include the Group 2 placed colt Monaasib.
Dark Angel
Berkshire Shadow - Coventry Stakes (Gr 2, 6f)
In winning the Coventry Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) on the opening day of this year’s Royal meeting, Berkshire Shadow (2 c ex Angel Vision by Oasis Dream) became the 71st stakes winner for Yeomanstown Stud-based sire Dark Angel (Acclamation). The following day Indie Angel (4 f ex Indigo Lady by Sir Percy) landed the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes (Gr 2, 1m). A Listed winner previously, she provided her sire with his 39th Group winner.
Bred by Cheveley Park Stud, Berkshire Shadow is now unbeaten in two career starts for trainer Andrew Balding while the John and Thadie Gosden-trained Indie Angel is raced by Cheveley Park Stud.
Dark Angel heads the leading sires table in Europe by winners with 76 so far this season.
Dawn Approach
Poetic Flare - St James’s Palace Stakes (Gr 1, 1m)
The Jim Bolger-trained Poetic Flare (3 c ex Maria Lee by Rock Of Gibraltar) impressed in Tuesday’s St James’s Palace Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) when recording a four and a quarter length victory over the Yulong-bound stallion Lucky Vega (Lope De Vega).
Bred by his trainer and raced by his wife, Poetic Flare has now won five of his eight career starts and Tuesday’s victory was the colt’s second at Group 1 level after winning the 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) last month. Poetic Flare then ran sixth in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (Gr 1, 1600m) at Longchamp two weeks later before backing up the following week in the Irish 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) when he finished second, beaten a short-head.
Poetic Flare is one of 15 stakes winners and the only Group 1 winner to date for his sire Dawn Approach (New Approach) who was also bred by Bolger, as was his grandsire New Approach (Galileo). Dawn Approach shuttled to Australia for five seasons between 2014 and 2018.
Dream Ahead
Dream Of Dreams - Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f)
Dream Of Dreams (7 g ex Vasilia by Dansili), a son of former shuttler Dream Ahead (Diktat) recorded his second Group 1 victory in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) on Saturday. The Sir Michael Stoute-trained favourite took the lead in the closing stages and scored by a length from Glen Shiel (Pivotal). Art Power (Dark Angel) was another three quarters of a length back in third.
Dream Of Dreams, who won the Sprint Cup (Gr 1, 6f) last September, is one of four Group 1 winners for Dream Ahead who has notched up 31 stakes winners overall.
Dubawi
Kemari - Queen’s Vase (Gr 2, 1m6f)
Creative Force - Jersey Stakes (Gr 3, 7f)
The Godolphin-raced Kemari (3 g ex Koora by Pivotal) took a step up in class in the Queen’s Vase (Gr 2, 1m6f) and provided Darley’s Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) with his 208th stakes winner and 133rd Group winner. Bred by the Cumani’s Fittocks Stud in Newmarket, Kemari has now won two of his three career starts having finished second on debut at Newmarket last month.
Creative Force (3 g ex Choose Me by Choisir) maintained his unbeaten record as a three-year-old this season with victory in the Jersey Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) on Saturday, providing his sire with his second stakes winner of the meeting. The Charlie Appleby-trained joint favourite finished off well to pull clear to record a one and a quarter length victory over stable mate Naval Crown (Dubawi).
Dubawi’s stakes winners are headed by 44 Group 1 winners and he is firing at a rate of 15.2 per cent stakes winners to runners.
Frankel
Juan Elcano - Wolferton Stakes (Listed, 1m2f)
Mohaafeth - Hampton Court Stakes (Gr 3, 1m2f)
Juan Elcano (4 g ex Whatami by Daylami) recorded his first victory since he broke his maiden in June 2019 when taking out Tuesday’s Wolferton Stakes (Listed, 1m2f). The Kevin Ryan-trained gelding scored a half length victory over joint favourite Patrick Sarsfield (Australia) and in doing so provided Juddmonte Farm’s Frankel (Galileo) with his 71st stakes winner.
On Thursday, Frankel notched up his 48th Group winner when the William Haggas-trained Mohaafeth (3 c ex French Dressing by Sea The Stars) kept his unbeaten three-year-old career in tack when he won the Hampton Court Stakes (Gr 3, 1m2f). The colt had run twice at two last year and returned in March to break his maiden over a mile at Lingfield, and came into Thursday’s race having won the Newmarket Stakes (Listed, 1m2f) at his last start on May 1. Mohaafeth, started the 11/8 favourite on Thursday and did not disappoint, beating Roman Empire (Galileo) by a length and three quarters.
Frankel will once again be covering to southern hemisphere time this year for a fee of £70,000 at Juddmonte’s Banstead Manor Stud in Newmarket. He has sired 15 Group 1 winners to date; three of those coming in Australia in Converge, Hungry Heart and Mirage Dancer while his stats make for impressive reading. He is firing at a rate of 15.2 per cent stakes winners to runners worldwide and in Australia he has sired 25 winners from 36 runners and 19.4 per cent stakes winners to runners.
He currently heads the leading sires table in Europe by prize money.
Galileo
Love - Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f)
Love (4 f ex Pikaboo by Pivotal) returned after a 300 day break to win Wednesday’s Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f). Bred by Coolmore and trained by Aidan O’Brien for Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and Mrs John Magnier, Love showed tenacity to record her fourth Group 1 victory following her Moyglare Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) win as a juvenile and 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m), Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f) and Yorkshire Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f) victories last season as a three-year-old.
Love is one of 337 stakes winners and 90 Group 1 winners for the peerless Galileo (Sadler’s Wells).
Gleneagles
Loving Dream - Ribblesdale Stakes (Gr 2, 1m4f)
Lordship Stud homebred Loving Dream (3 f ex Kissable by Danehill Dancer) handled the step up in class in Thursday’s Ribblesdale Stakes (Gr 2, 1m4f) to become the 13th stakes winner for her sire Gleneagles (Galileo).
Beaten last start in the Oaks Trial Fillies’ Stakes (Listed, 1m3.5f), the John and Thady Gosden-trained Loving Dream beat Eshaada (Muhaarar) by three quarters of a length.
Havana Gold
Chipotle - Windsor Castle Stakes (Listed, 5f)
Tweenhills Stud-based Havana Gold (Teofilo) recorded his eighth stakes winner when Chipotle (2 c ex Lightsome by Makfi) returned to winning ways in Wednesday’s Windsor Castle Stakes (Listed, 5f).
The Eve Johnson Houghton-trained colt suffered his first career defeat at his previous start in the National Stakes (Listed, 5f) at Sandown on May 27 but put that behind him to record his third career victory when he beat Dig Two (Cotai Glory) by two and a quarter lengths. The Seymour Bloodstock bred and raced colt Boonie (Brazen Beau) finished another head further away in third.
Havana Gold’s stakes winners include one Group 1 winner in Flying Five Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) victor Havana Grey.
Kingman
Palace Pier - Queen Anne Stakes (Gr 1, 1m)
Palace Pier (4 c ex Beach Frolic by Nayef) recorded his fourth Group 1 victory in Tuesday’s Queen Anne Stakes (Gr 1, 1m). The John and Thady Gosden-trained colt justified his favouritism and beat Lope Y Fernandez (Lope De Vega) by one and a half lengths.
Frankel’s barnmate at Banstead Manor Stud, Kingman has sired three other Group 1 winners in Persian King, Domestic Spending and Schnell Meiseter while his overall stakes winners tally stands at 37, 19 of those winning at Group level.
Kodiac
Campanelle - Commonwealth Cup (Gr 1, 6f)
The Wesley Ward-trained and Stonestreet Stables-owned Campanelle’s (3 f ex Janina by Namid) victory in Friday’s Commonwealth Cup (Gr 1, 6f) provided her sire Kodiac (Danehill) with his first stakes winner of this year’s Royal Ascot Meeting. The victory was the second at Group 1 level for Campanelle following her victory in last year’s Prix Morny (Gr 1, 1200m).
Kodiac, who is based at Tally-Ho Stud in Ireland where his 2021 fee was set at €65,000, has sired 66 stakes winners with his five Group 1 winners including the Cambridge Stud shuttler Hello Youmzain.
Le Havre
Wonderful Tonight - Hardwicke Stakes (Gr 2, 1m4f)
Dual Group 1 winner Wonderful Tonight (4 f ex Salvation by Montjeu), one of five Group 1 winners and 44 stakes winners for her sire Noverre (Le Havre) won Saturday’s Hardwicke Stakes (Gr 2, 1m4f).
Having not been seen since taking out the British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes (Gr 1, 1m4f) at Ascot last October, the David Menuisier-trained and Christopher Wright-owned Wonderful Tonight recorded a one and a half length victory over the Aidan O’Brien-trained favourite Broome (Australia).
Le Havre is based at Montfort et Preaux in France where his 2021 fee was €40,000.
Mayson
Oxted - King’s Stand Stakes (Gr 1, 5f)
Oxted (5 g ex Charlotte Rosina by Choisir) added a second Group 1 victory to his record in Tuesday’s King’s Stand Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) after he emulated his sire in winning the July Cup (Gr 1, 6f).
Trained by Roger Teal, Oxted has now won five of his 14 career starts and on Tuesday won going away, beating Arecibo (Invincible Spirit) by a length and three quarters.
Oxted is one of nine stakes winners and the only Group 1 winner for his Cheveley Park Stud-based sire Mayson (Invincible Spirit).
No Nay Never
Alcohol Free - Coronation Stakes (Gr 1, 1m)
Alcohol Free (3 f ex Plying by Hard Spun) recorded his second Group 1 victory, following her Cheveley Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) win last season in the Coronation Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Royal Ascot on Friday.
Trained by Andrew Balding, the filly raced in midfield before she took the lead in the closing stages to record a length and a half victory over the Richard Hannon-trained Snow Lantern (Frankel).
Alcohol Free is one of 29 stakes winners and three Group 1 winners for Coolmore Stud’s No Nay Never (Scat Daddy). He shuttled to Australia for four seasons between 2016 and 2019.
Profitable
Quick Suzy - Queen Mark Stakes (Gr 2, 5f)
Quick Suzy’s (2 f ex Snooze by Marju) Queen Mary Stakes (Gr 2, 5f) victory handed her first season sire Profitable (Invincible Spirit) his first stakes winner.
Trained by Gavin Cromwell and raced by Eclipse Thoroughbreds, Quick Suzy ran on well in the closing stages to record a one and a quarter length victory over the Wesley Ward-trained favourite Twilight Gleaming (National Defense), who is raced by Stonestreet Stables.
Profitable, who won the 2016 King’s Stand Stakes (Gr 1, 5f), stands at Darley’s Kildangan Stud in Ireland where his 2021 fee was set at €10,000. His first crop includes eight winners and he currently heads the leading first season sires table in Europe by earnings.
Teofilo
Subjectivist - Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2m4f)
The Mark Johnston-trained Subjectivist (4 c Reckoning by Danehill Dancer) caused an upset in Thursday’s Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2m4f), recording his second victory at Group 1 level following his win in last year’s Prix Royal-Oak (Gr 1, 3100m) at Longchamp.
The son of Teofilo (Galileo) pulled away to record a five length victory over Princess Zoe (Jukebox Jury) with another half length back to Spanish Mission (Noble Mission) in third. Stradivarius, who was shooting for his fourth consecutive victory in the race, was a well-beaten fourth.
Subjectivist is one of 98 stakes winners and 21 Group 1 winners for former Darley shuttler Teofilo. He has sired 18 individual stakes winners in Australia including Happy Clapper, Humidor, Palentino, Kermadec, Sonntag and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winning duo Twilight Payment and Cross Counter.
