Native Trail takes out Superlative Stakes at Newmarket
Oasis Dream (Green Desert) sired his 126 stakes winner when Native Trail (2 c ex Needleleaf by Observatory) won the Superlative Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at Newmarket on Saturday.
Trainer Charlie Appleby said: "He's a lovely horse to ride through a race as he goes through his gears smoothly. He showed that on his first start at Sandown and we saw the same today.
"I wouldn't say I was confident we'd be winning, but the way the race was developing, I knew he'd be doing it all the right way round and would be hitting the line strong.
"He's a breeze-up consigned horse, so he'd have had a bit of experience put to him early doors. But you wouldn't know that, to be fair – he's a very laid-back character.
"It was a good achievement winning today, but I do feel that when we step him up in trip, we'll hopefully see a bit more improvement again."
Native Trail has been through the ring on three occasions; firstly as a foal when purchased by Sam Sangster Bloodstock for €50,000 at the 2019 Arqana December Sale, before realising 67,000gns at the 2020 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 when purchased by Margaret O’Toole / Oak Tree Farm for 67,000gns before finally making 210,000gns at the 2021 Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale when purchased by Godolphin for 210,000gns.
Native Trail is the first stakes winner for his dam Needleleaf (Observatory) who is an unraced sister to Group One winner African Rose. This is the immediate family of Fair Eva (Frankel) and Coolmore shuttle sire Calyx (Kingman).
Oasis Dream stands at Juddmonte Farm’s Banstead Manor Stud in Newmarket where his 2021 fee was £20,000.
