First season sire Galileo Gold (Paco Boy) recorded his first Group One winner on Sunday when Ebro River (2 c ex Soft Power by Balmont) won the Phoenix Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) at the Curragh. Trained by Hugo Palmer, who also trained his sire, Ebro River took the lead in the early stages and kept on well to score by three quarters of a length from Dr Zempf (Dark Angel). The favourite, Go Bears Go (Kodi Bears), was a further head away in third.

"We'll see – he'd either go the the Prix Morny or the Middle Park now I would think, and possibly both depending on how he comes out of it," said Palmer.

"I'm pretty sure he (Ebro River) was his first winner and he was certainly his first stakes winner when he won the National and now he's his first Group One winner – Roger O'Callaghan (of Tally Ho) won't be able to accuse me of not doing my bit!"
