Eight Carat To Jennifer Eccles. Jennifer Eccles broke her maiden in Thursday's Eight Carat Classic (Gr 2, 1600m) and in doing so handed her sire, Rip Van Winkle (Galileo), with his 30th stakes winner.

Runner up in the New Zealand 1000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), Jennifer Eccles was ridden on Boxing Day by James McDonald.

"She's a sweetheart of a filly with a great nature and obviously we will have to make a challenge on the filly's series (New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year)," said trainer Shaune Ritchie.

"We will probably go to the Desert Gold Stakes and then to the Oaks.

"There's a little question on getting further but she's got such a good turn of foot and she's so laidback, that will help her."

A 3-year-old filly, Jennifer Eccles is out of the stakes placed mare Platinum Elle (Elnadim). She is out of the stakes placed mare Lady Tee (Zabeel) who is a half-sister to the dam of Group 2 winner Puttanesca (Bertolini). Further back this is also the family of Jabali (Exceed And Excel) and Sacred Kingdom (Encosta De Lago).

Jennifer Eccles was a NZ$5,000 bargain purchase by Adrian Clark Bloodstock Consultancy from the Westend Partnership draft at the 2017 NZB National Weanling Sale.

The Windsor Park Stud-based Rip Van Winkle stood for a fee of NZ12,500 (plus GST) in 2019. He has 3 lots catalogued for Karaka 2020 Book 1 and the same number catalogued for Book 2.
