Darley stallion Shooting To Win (Northern Meteor) sired his third stakes winner on Saturday and first in New Zealand when his son Mascarpone (4 g ex Fromage by Flying Spur) proved too strong in the Lodge Legacy Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Te Rapa and in the process handed his Redwood (High Chaparral) half-brother a valuable update before he goes through the ring at the New Zealand Ready To Run Sale later this month.

The Team Rogerson-trained four-year-old had disappointed slightly when finishing a well beaten third on a wet surface at Trentham last time out but bounced back to his best on Saturday with a dominant length victory over Coventina Bay (Shamexpress), while Short Fuse (Per Incanto) was another neck away in third.

Co-trainer Graeme Rogerson earmarked the Levin Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) as the gelding’s next target, but also has his sights set on some goals in Australia in the future.

“I think you will see him in Melbourne in the new year for a couple of sprints over there and then back in Australia next spring,” said Rogerson.

“I really think he has the makings of a good horse and you can see that by the times he runs

“I nearly took him to Christchurch for the Stewards at Riccarton this week but I was frightened that if he struck a wet track that it was going to be a long way from home without much chance.

“We’ll be taking him to Otaki for the Levin Stakes for his next assignment.”

Purchased for his trainers for NZ$160,000 during Book 1 of the New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Select Yearling Sale in 2017 from the Windsor Park draft, the gelding is one of two winners out of unplaced Flying Spur (Danehill) mare Fromage.

Mascarpone’s third dam is Listed scorer Bislotto (Bellotto), the dam of Group 3 winner Bel Danoro (Danehill), while she is the grandam of 2016 Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Sofia Rosa (Makfi).

Fromage’s 2017 filly by Redwood is named is Futaie and is unraced, while Westbury Stud will offer the Redwood gelding as Lot 210 at the New Zealand Ready To Run Sale which gets underway on November 18 and the mare has most recently foaled a filly by El Roca (Fastnet Rock).

Mascarpone joins Group 3-winning duo Ms Catherine and Extra Time as Shooting To Win’s other stakes winners and he is standing at Darley’s Kelvinside base at fee of $16,500 (inc GST). He has three lots catalogued at Tuesday’s Magic Millions Gold Coast 2YOs In Training Sale.
