The Jamie Richards-trained Imperatriz (2 f ex Berimbau by Shamardal) followed up her winning debut at Otaki on November 26 with a victory in the Eclipse Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Ellerslie on Friday and in the process handed I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) with his 62nd stakes winner.

Owned by Te Akau, she stayed on strongly to beat Stormy (Telperion) by a head, the pair pulled well clear of the Sword Of State (Snitzel), who is also trained by Richards and was another four and a half lengths further away in third.

"I was so excited to ride this filly today," said winning rider Danielle Johnson.

"I galloped her here at Ellerslie a couple of weeks ago and she gave me such a good feel that day.

"She's progressed so well. She takes everything in her stride. She just gives me the feel of such a good horse.

"I knew Sword Of State was going to be hard to beat, and Tony Pike's horse had a big reputation, but this is such an exciting filly. I just knew she'd run well."

Bred by Raffles Dancers, the daughter of I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) was purchased by David Ellis for $360,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the Bhima Thoroughbreds draft last January and she is the second foal and first winner out of the winning and Group 2-placed Shamardal (Giant's Causeway) mare Berimbau.

Further back the filly hails from the same family as Group 2 winner Royal Courtship (Royal Academy) and stakes-winning duo Proud Player (Squill) and Poor Judge (Royal Academy).

Bhima Thoroughbreds will offer a filly by Fastnet Rock (Danehill) out of Berimbau at this year's Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and she is catalogued as Lot 96. The mare has most recently been covered by Vinery Stud-based sire Press Statement (Hinchinbrook).

I Am Invincible has 55 lots catalogued for the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, which gets underway on January 12.

Shamardal meanwhile, who died at the age of 18 last April, is proving to be a successful broodmare sire with Imperatriz the 52nd stakes winner out of a mare by the son of Giant's Causeway (Storm Cat). Those stakes winners are headed by five Group 1 winners in Hello Youmzain, Awtaad, Pretty Pollyanna, Mighty High and Latrobe.

Barneswood Farm Eclipse Stakes (G2)

Age: 2yo Type: OPEN

This G2 for juveniles only over 1200m saw the Australian bred filly Imperatriz remain unbeaten after she raced third the inner early then fifth the outer before moving up turning for home and leading at the 300m. She hung on to score by a head in 1.08.40, which was the fastest time of the day it should be noted (it was half a second or three lengths faster than the G1 Railway Handicap held later in the day won and run in 1:08.91). The winners and where they came from were eighth (five-off the inside and four lengths from the leader), fourth (trailed inner and length and a half from the leader), third (four-off the inside and a length from the leader), led (one-off the inside and led by two lengths), second (two-off the inside and eighth lengths from the leader), third (four-off the inside and a length from the leader), led (neck in front and one-off), ninth (seven-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), third (four-off the inside and a length from the leader) and third (two-off the inside and length and a half from the leader). Imperatriz knows what the winning post is for having won both her starts now by a very small margin each time. Second home was Stormy, which after an awkward start settled down sixth in a gap and then improved wide near the home turn in this fast run race. He moved up fourth turning in and was second at the 250m and just missed scoring at the end. Stormy had won both his starts prior and a trial so had yet to taste defeat. Third home was another Australian bred in Sword Of State that led wide early then was headed and he took a trail before taking over turning for home only to be headed quickly at the 300m. He ended up third and was almost five lengths from the winner at the line. Avonallo was fourth home beaten almost eight lengths after racing third the outer and then being a battling fifth turning for home. The last three home were beaten ten lengths and as far as just under twenty lengths. The rank failure of that trio was the Australian bred Khufu that was on debut today and ran third favourite (at $4.80) then after being wide early challenged for the front before taking over. The colt went clear then was headed off quickly turning for home and stopped to be beaten twelve and a half lengths and finished second to last home. The time was fast and some of these probably left it all out on the track. The first two home were dominant and the third finisher while distant at the line he did do a fair bit of work early.
