Waikato Stud-based sire Ocean Park (Thorn Park) sired his 13th stakes winner when Our Hail Mary (5 m ex Repenting by Ekraar) took out the Trentham Stakes (Gr 3, 2100m) on Saturday.

Coming into the race off the back of two victories, the five-year-old mare continued her good form when she beat Fiscal Fantasy (Skilled) by a quarter of a length, while Dr Velocious (Haradasun) was the same distance away in third.

"I think she's cemented herself as a future broodmare now," trainer and part-owner Allan Sharrock said.

"She's by Ocean Park out of a sister to Shez Sinsational, so she's got the pedigree behind her and the family is really firing at the moment.

"I'm proud of the mare, it wasn't easy for her today. There was a lot of pressure on all the way and she had to work hard, but to her credit, she really kept on giving."

Our Hail Mary is now the winner of six of her 13 starts, with the prospect of much more still to come.

"Over ground, I believe she'll get to the top level.

"But I'm not going to ask too much of her this time. I've got things like the Waikato Cup in mind for next season. There are a couple of fillies and mares' races coming up over the next few months, those could be nice options for her."

Those include the Manawatu Breeders' Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) on April 9 and the Travis Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) on May 1.

Purchased by her trainer for NZ$35,000 at the 2017 New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka National Yearling Sale, Our Hail Mary is out of winning Ekraar (Red Ransom) mare Repenting, who is herself a sister to multiple Group 1 winner Shez Sinsational.

Shez Sinsational is herself the dam of Listed winner Sinarahma (Darci Brahma).

In 2019 Repenting produced a colt by Ocean Park's barmate Tivaci (High Chaparral).

Ocean Park has 17 lots catalogued at the New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka 2021 - Book 1 Sale.

This G2 Open at set weights and penalties over 2100m went to the favourite Our Hail Mary that was having her first Group outing. The 5yo mare had placed at Listed level as a 3yo filly but today was tackling all comers and after racing sixth came up fourth wider turning for home and surged to lead at the 100m. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were ninth (seven-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), eighth (eight-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), ninth (on the fence and four lengths from the leader), led (on the fence and half a length in front), seventh (five-off the fence and three and a half lengths from the leader), led (three-off the fence and a head in front), fourth (five-off the inside and eleven lengths from the leader), fifth (six-off the fence and two lengths from the leader) and second (six-off the fence and a length from the leader). Our Hail Mary won by half a length in 2:11.86 and ran out her first attempt at this trip well showing that stamina was her true calling. It was her sixth win in thirteen starts and her first at Group level and there clearly is more to come and over longer it does appear too. The Australian bred Fiscal Fantasy ran on hard from last the inner on settling and she really unleashed to be fifth wide out at the 200m and kept coming for a super second. Dr Velocious the South Islander was wide before settling fourth the outer and moved up third wide at the 600m and actually reached second at the 100m before being third the final 15m. He was ridden by the apprentice Kozzi Asano and to add merit his only other Blacktype outing saw him finish fourth at G3 in NZ Cup (3200m), when then ridden by a senior rider. Fourth home was the 8yo mare One Of The Best that was having her first outing at Blacktype and after settling down second the outer and a long way from the tearaway leader here. The rider dropped the whip the final 200m too to add further merit to the effort and she was only beaten just over two lengths. Mohaka was next home beaten two and a half lengths after ending up seventh the inner and working off the fence at the 600m. She ran on well to reach fifth at the 50m. Next home was the clear leader Camino Rocoso that at some stages was a dozen lengths clear and he looked to have almost bolted on his rider. The second favorite gave a sight and kept them honest but was always going to stop and once headed at the 150m he stopped and ended up beaten five lengths. The last three home were beaten seven lengths and up to just over nine lengths with Hunta Pence (third last) and Dolcetto (last) both disappointing. The winner Our Hail Mary looks a Cup winner in waiting as her stamina seems untapped and she will be looking to add a G2 or G1 to her record this year.
