Quattro Quinta lands Wellesley Stakes.

The Jamie Richards-trained Quattro Quinta (2 g ex Quintette by Alamosa) produced a brave performance to win the Wellesley Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Trentham on Saturday and in the process chalked up the 51st stakes winner for The Oaks Stud resident Darci Brahma (Danehill).

Last seen running second in the Challenge Stakes (Listed, 1100m), the gelding got his head in front at stakes level when beating Wolfgang (Puccuni) by a nose, while Magneto (Showcasing) was another two lengths away in third.

Trainer Jamie Richards was pleased with the effort from his charge who was having his first run since finishing second at Pukekohe back in November.

"He's a real little racehorse," Richards said.

"I think we have to make the most of him this season as I'm not sure if he has the scope to train on.

"It was a good strong effort, helped by the fact he found the rail, which is a big assist to the two-year-olds.

"He will go to the Matamata Slipper now and then on to Auckland and Manawatu."

The two-year-old gelding is one of two winners out of winning Alamosa (O'Reilly) mare Quintette, who is herself a half-sister to Group 2 winner Everswindell (Align).

Further back Listed-winning trio Shaquille (Blazing Keel), Best Yet To Come (Econsul) and Major Decision (Zamazaan) also feature on the page.

Last breeding season Quintette produced a filly by Newhaven Park Stud-based Xtravagant (Pentire) and was covered again by the sire in 2020.

Darci Brahma has nine lots catalogued at the New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka 2021 - Book 1 Sale.

Irt No.1 Wellesley Stakes (LR)

Age: 2yo Type: OPEN

The winner Quattro Quinta scored by a nostril flare as an odds on favourite after leading up and kicking to just score in 57.58 for the Listed win at 1000m. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were ninth (seven-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), eighth (eight-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), ninth (on the fence and four lengths from the leader), led (on the fence and half a length in front), seventh (five-off the fence and three and a half lengths from the leader), led (three-off the fence and a head in front), fourth (five-off the inside and eleven lengths from the leader), fifth (six-off the fence and two lengths from the leader) and second (six-off the fence and a length from the leader). Quattro Quinta was winning his second race today and his first at Blacktype having run second at his prior run, also at Listed level. A nose away was Wolfgang that came with a sustained run despite racing four-wide the whole way and reaching second at the 200m. He looks a winner in waiting based on this effort. Magneto raced second the outer and was third at the 300m before holding that spot at the line albeit two lengths away at the line. The Australian bred Titled ran second favourite and after being sixth away he fought on the inner to be beaten two and a half lengths into fourth spot. Tui Rocks was a lip away in fifth spot at the line after racing seventh and wide to the home turn and she fought on. The Night King was a disappointing overall sixth and beaten almost five and a half lengths after racing handy the inner early. The last two home raced wide and felt the pinch the run home but did not drop away completely. The winner Quattro Quinta won the prize but the kudos went to Wolfgang in this Listed event as he went down the smallest margin after sitting very deep throughout. The expensive Titled ran a fair fourth but needs more time it does seem and more distance too.
