Former Haunui Farm shuttler Showcasing (Oasis Dream) was provided with his 51st stakes winner on Saturday when his son Magneto (2 c ex Trivial Pursuit by Nom Du Jeu) landed the Taranaki 2YO Classic (Gr 3, 1200m) at New Plymouth.

Last seen finishing third behind Quattro Quinta (Darci Brahma) in the Wellesley Stakes (Listed, 1000m), the Steven Cole-trained colt turned the tables on that gelding, beating him two and a quarter lengths. Wolfgang (Puccini) was a further length away in third.

Cole had been confident of a good showing from his colt, with the race panning out exactly as he had hoped and he is now eyeing a tilt at the highest level, with Magneto set to head to the Sistema Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Ellerslie next month.

“We put the winkers on him for the first time and I think the penny has also dropped after his first three runs, so that combination helped him out today,” Cole said.

“I was hoping we could get a soft trail behind Ima Roca Bee as she looked like she might lead on what she had done at the trials.

“He has wanted to over-race a bit in his races, but Ryan thought if he could get a trail it would help him out and he could show some real zip at the finish.

“We’ll take him home and give him a few easy days, but I think we have to look at the Sistema Stakes at Ellerslie next month with him.”

Bred by Queensland-based Glen and Lisa Morton, Magneto is the only foal to race out of the unraced Nom Du Jeu (Montjeu) mare Trivial Pursuit.

The colt comes from the same family as Listed winner Leeds (I Am Invincible). Magneto’s fourth dam is Group 3 winner Swiftsynd (Swift Gun) - the dam of three-time Group 2 scorer Le Zagaletta (Last Tycoon).

Showcasing was responsible for siring a stakes double in New Zealand on Saturday, with the other win coming when Showemhowitsdone (3 f ex Jaffari by Iffraaj) followed up her victory in the Gore Guineas (Listed, 1335m) with a win in the Dunedin Guineas (Listed, 1500m).

The son of Oasis Dream’s (Green Desert) progeny is headed by Group 1-winning trio Quiet Reflection, Advertise and Mohaather and he is standing at Whitsbury Manor Stud for a fee of £45,000 this year, while his son Mohaather has joined Shadwell Stud’s Nunnery Stud roster for the 2021 season.

Woburn Farm 2yo Classic (G3)

Age: 2yo Type: OPEN

The winner of this very small G3 juvenile event at New Plymouth was the maiden Magneto that enjoyed a good trail third the inner then shot through closest in turning for home. The colt won by two and a quarter lengths in 1:10.50 to record his first win and it came at Stakes class too for good measure. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were second (neck back the inner), second (one-off the inside and a neck back), led (four length lead on the fence), third (one-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), third (one-off the inside and half a length from the leader), second (one-off the inside and a head from the leader), fourth (one-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), second (one-off the inside and five lengths from the leader) and sixth (four-off the inside and four lengths from the leader). Today was his third run in Stakes class and he had prior to today placed third behind Quattro Quinta at Listed level but today turned the tables easily. He looks to be a colt that is getting better with racing and he has tactical speed too so more is in store wherever they may go next. Quattro Quinta had to bow to a superior performance on the day when second but he has built up a tidy record so far of never having finished worse than second in five outings, which includes two wins (one at Listed level). He sat second the outer but could not accelerate like the winner did the run home but still fought on. Wolfgang ran third which means the same three juveniles from the trifecta that did so at Listed level prior at Trentham filled those positions today. He raced fourth the outer and moved up turning for home and was a third at the 200m and held that position albeit beaten over three and a quarter lengths. Madam Sass on debut ran fourth after a slow start and then reaching fifth the inner across the top, The filly was fourth the inner at the 100m and looks a winner in waiting. The rear trio were beaten over nine lengths and up to over ten lengths with the first starter Ima Roca Bee showing leader speed before stopping fast. This was a tepid G3 event and its rating must come under pressure as the same Listed trifecta albeit in slightly different order happened today that occurred last start at Listed level.
