Having taken out the RC J Swap Contractors Sprint Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) on December 12, the Robbie Paterson-trained Coventina Bay (5 m Shamexpress - Coventina by High Chaparral) added a second Group 3 to her CV when she took out the Cuddle Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Trentham on Saturday.

Coventina Bay was placed behind the leaders by Sam Collett in the early part of the contest. After finding daylight at the 300 metre mark the mare looked to have the race in the bag, but Jessiegee (Alamosa) went with the mare and eventually finished a head away in second. Mohaka (Nadeem) was a further length and three-quarters away in third.

With this latest victory, Coventina Bay has now eight of her 13 starts, which has seen accrue NZ$173,700 in career prize-money.

The mare will now be aimed at the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 1, 600m) at Te Aroha on April 10.

“She was a bit fresh today as she was nine kilograms heavier than when she won last time,” Patterson said.

“Her Melbourne Cup is the Breeders’ Stakes at Te Aroha, but I’m proud of her and she is just a little machine.

“She has had a lot of problems and they hurt her early on, but we’ve fixed them now and she’s good.”

Out of three time-winning mare Coventina, Coventina Bay becomes the first stakes winner in two generations of her pedigree and she hails from the same family as 1992 New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Nimue (Star Way) and Group 3 winner Deane Martin (Keeper).

Coventina Bay joins fellow Group 3 winner Embrace Me and stakes-winning trio London Express, Cyber Attack and Qiji Express as the Shamexpress’ other stakes winners.

Wentwood Grange Cuddle Stakes (G3)

Sex: FM Type: OPEN

This G3 mile for fillies and mares was won by the odds on ($1.70) Coventina Bay but she only scored by a short neck in 1:35.29. The 5yo mare raced handier than usual on settling in fifth the inner and pushed her way out and surged up to the third at the 300m before leading the 100m. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were fifth (on the fence and two and a half lengths from the leader), ninth (one-off the inside and three and a half lengths from the leader), fourth (three-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), led (four-off the inside and a length from the leader), fourth (on the inner and two lengths the leader), co-leader (one-off the inside), tenth (four-off the inside and five lengths from the leader), led (six-off the inside and a neck in front) and fourth (six-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader). Coventina Bay was winning her eighth race from just thirteen starts today and it was her second success at G3. This year she has raced four times for three wins and a third beaten less than a length at G2. The mare has won on good and heavy ground so her range is very good but she is best when settling back and unleashing it does seem. She has only missed the top three on raceday three times and they have resulted in a fourth and two fifths so she is very genuine. Second home today and giving the hotpot a real scare was Jessiegee that trailed the leaders and kept coming once angled off. The 7yo mare has come up well this year deadheating for first in an Open Handicap here a week ago considering she last won a race back in February of 2019. Third home after leading up was the resuming Mohaka that fought well once headed the final 100m. She won at Listed level over 2100m last October after also leading up and the 5yo mare is far better than her three wins from twenty-six outings to date does show. Fourth home was Belle Plaisir that raced wide and was fourth across the top and reached third turning for home before boxing on gamely to be beaten three and a half lengths. She was ridden by an apprentice jockey. Fifth home was Vent, a two win mare, beaten just under four lengths after racing eighth the inner and she got her finishing position on the post. Sixth home was the Australian bred Cruz Ramirez that was second chasing the leader and was still fourth at the 150m but got swamped thereafter. There was less than eight lengths from first to last with Tabata dropping out after racing fourth or fifth the outer. Sinarahma, the second favourite at $8, blew the start again by six lengths and was beaten five and a half lengths so her habit of walking out of the gates is proving very costly. The winner Coventina Bay when ridden cold and let rip for one surge is at her most lethal and she looks likely to tackle G1 this year.
