Coolmore Stud-based Fastnet Rock (Danehill) sired his 171st stakes winner on Saturday, when the Lauren Brennan-trained Packing Rockstar (5 g ex Anabandana by Anabaa) produced an impressive front-running run to win the RC Japan Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m) at Tauranga.

Packing Rockstar had produced an eye-catching performance to score over 1400 metres at Ellerslie at his last start, just three runs after finishing fourth in the Sistema Railway (Gr 1, 1200m) behind Avantage (Fastnet Rock) on New Year’s Day.

Despite having to fight hard to secure the pacemaking role in the early stages of the contest, Leith Innes had Packing Rockstar travelling easily once in front and was full of running approaching the home bend.

Once given his head, Packing Rockstar gave a kick before doggedly staving off his rivals to hold out the late-closing Siracusa (Sebring) by a neck with Gino Severini (Fastnet Rock) another nose away in third.

Brennan was thrilled with the win although she doesn’t have any firm plans for the horse due to his preference for good tracks.

“He was super today and got conditions to suit,” she said.

“He has only ever gone one average race and that was on a soft track at Matamata, so he definitely needs good going.

“With the tracks starting to soften we’ll just play things by ear and give him a few easy days before we decide about his next start.

“We could look at the Easter Stakes at Ellerslie, but it would need to be a good track for us to go there.”

Packing Rockstar was purchased by Ricky Yiu for $260,000 at the 2017 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the Coolmore Stud draft and he had one start in Hong Kong before being transferred to Brennan in New Zealand.

The gelding is out of dual New Zealand Group 1 winner Anabandana (Anabaa), who has produced two other foals to race and they have both been winners.

Anabandana herself is a half-sister to dual stakes winner Gybe (Fastnet Rock).

Further back this is the same pedigree as Group 3 winner Hessonite (Freud) and Listed-winning duo Roanoke (Danehill) and European Rose (Nureyev), while 2010 New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner King’s Rose (Redoute’s Choice) - who is the dam of Group 3 winner Satono Arthur (Deep Impact) - also features on the page.

In 2019 Anabandana produced a filly by I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) and she has most recently been covered by So You Think (High Chaparral).

Fastnet Rock is enjoying a lucrative season, with Packing Rockstar being his 15th stakes winner in Australasia this term and they are headed by Group 1-winning trio Avantage, Personal and New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Rocket Spade.

Japan Trophy (G2)

Type: OPEN

The winner of this G2 mile at set weights and penalties was the Australian bred Packing Rockstar that soon led and kicked on best to score by a short neck in 1:34.74. It was the 5yo gelding's fifth win in fourteen starts and came at his first mile attempt too plus he ran a clear second favourite. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were third (four-off the inside and half a length from the leader), fourth (one-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), third (six-off the inside and half a length from the leader), second (two-off the inside and half a length from the leader), led (one-off the inside and a length in front), led (one-off the inside and a head in front) and sixth (two-off the inside and three lengths from the leader). Today was the first G2 win by the gelding and was his third attempt at Blacktype with a fourth at G1 over 1200m being his best effort prior. He has won five of his fourteen starts and was tackling a mile today for the first time and has a bigger distance range to show his worth now a mature enough five-year-old. Second home was Siracusa that was second up and she really hit the line well the inside after racing well back the inner on settling. The 4yo mare has been a Listed winner and G2 placed (here at WFA) so has a lot more Blacktype to come as she is just getting into this campaign now. Gino Severini was third with the Irish bred racing sixth the outer and improving through fifth across the top before striding up into third turning for home. The 7yo gelding fought hard and was only beaten a short neck and a nose as he added too his G3 win on November 20 with a G2 placing today. Fourth home and beaten less than half a length was the third favourite Travelling Light that raced second the outer and fought hard all the away to the line. Fifth home was Prise De Fer that started a clear favourite at $2.60 and after a slow start was last early before improving through ninth then eighth. He improved sixth and wide turning for home and was fourth at the 200m and closed gamely to be beaten just over half a length. Sixth home and beaten over two and a half lengths was Vernanme that was back early then improved through fourth the inner before being sixth the fence midrace and seventh across the top. The 5yo gelding ran on once working off the fence turning for home. Next home was Hypnos that was wide and eased back to second last the outer and was in the rear duo across the top before running on wider. Germanicus set the pace at $50 and hung out early and the middle stages before being headed midrace and racing fourth the inner to the home turn. He wilted the run home but it was an improvement on his shocker resuming. Yearn ran ninth beaten over five lengths after being last across the top to the home turn and plugged away while the rest got beaten over eight lengths and as much as almost ten lengths. Last home was Ocean Billy that raced fifth or sixth wide and then up third deep across the top but was in reverse near the home turn and the effort told. The first five runners home were covered by a little over half a length and whether this was a legitimate G2 strength field is debatable. The time however of 1:34.74 was okay though the track record for a mile is 1:33.82 set by Society Beau (won 12 races) in 2002.
