Galileo filly makes €1.5million at Goffs

3 minute read

Yulong Investments go to €630,000 a half-brother to Lucky Vega on day one of Orby Sale

A filly by Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) topped the first day of the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale on Tuesday when bought by MV Magnier for €1.5 million.

Sold by Baroda Stud, the filly was offered as Lot 152 and is the first foal out of Grade One winner Nickname (Scat Daddy).

"She is a lovely filly," said Magnier. "Roger O'Dwyer and all the lads who have looked after her all the time have always really liked her. She is by Galileo and her mother was a very good race mare by Scat Daddy who could be a very good broodmare sire."

For Baroda Stud it was the consignor's best result at Goffs Orby Sale and the farm's David Cox was thrilled to be back at Kildare Paddocks with such an outstanding filly.

"She never put a foot wrong from when she got here and she was very busy. It is great to have the Orby back here and to ring a bell like that," he said.

The second most expensive lot and the top priced colt to sell on Tuesday was a son of Footstepsinthesand (Giant’s Causeway) who was bought by BBA Ireland and Yulong Investments for €630,000.

Sold by Anna Sundstrom’s Coulonces Sales as Lot 196, the colt is out of unraced mare Queen Of Carthage (Cape Cross) making him a sister to Lucky Vega (Lope De Vega) who is standing his first season at Yulong’s Victorian farm this year.

"I saw this foal and I said 'put all your eggs in one basket, we're buying him," said Filip Zwicky who bought the colt as a foal at the Goffs November Foal Sale last year on behalf of John Christensen and Alice Weiste.

"I know he will be more expensive, he'll probably be a €200,000 foal but we should buy him.' He was so gutsy going again and again and again, all the way to €300,000,

Another filly to sell well on Tuesday was a daughter of Juddmonte Farm’s Kingman (Invincible Spirit) who made €500,000 and was bought by Johnny Murtagh and Eddie Linehan. Sold by Al Eile stud as Lot 29, the filly is out of three-time Group One winner and European Champion 2YO filly Finsceal Beo (Mr Greeley).

Overall on Tuesday, 183 of the 200 lots offered were sold producing a clearance rate of 91.5 per cent. The aggregate finished up at €19,574,500 after the first day. The average sat at €104,120 and the median was €75,000.

At the 2020 renewal, held in England, 168 of the 203 lots offered were sold for £11,614,000. The average was £69,131 whilst the median was £50,000 after the first day of selling. The aggregate this year was up 53 per cent, while the average rose 37 per cent and the median increased 36 per cent.

The sale continues on Wednesday.
