Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale got off to a strong start on Thursday. A total of 259 lots were sold for an aggregate of 7,268,800 guineas, an increase of 43 per cent on the 2020 figure. The average was up 31 per cent to 28,065 guineas whilst the median rose 63 per cent to 26,000 guineas.

The top price of 150,000 guineas was the second highest recorded at this sale and came when a colt by Ulysees (Galileo), out of Regal Heiress (Pivotal), was bought by Matt Coleman of Stroud Coleman Bloodstock, who was standing alongside young Newmarket-based trainer Charlie Fellowes.

"I bought him for a guy called Bill Mathis, an American client of Sean Clancy's whom I also buy for. He owns Eve Lodge, who was the first horse I bought for him – I bought her after she won her maiden and she went on to win the Sirenia Stakes. Bill was keen to try and buy a few yearlings. He bought a share in a couple of fillies – one in Book 1 – and we tried to find a couple of colts, but we found Book 2 very strong so I thought we'd keep going here," said Coleman.

"I just thought he was the best colt I saw here, he is very athletic. He's a full-brother to Gwan So, who has been sold to go to Annabel Neasham in Australia.

"He's a light-framed, athletic Galileo-type and I could see him doing well here for trainer Charlie Fellowes and then going to the States. He's a full-brother to a good horse and he looks like a racehorse."

Regal Heiress has produced three winners and Gwan So (Ulysees) who has placed four times at two this year including in the Flying Scotsman Stakes (Listed, 7f). The sale represented successful pinhook for David and Geraldine Hegarty of Hegarty Bloodstock who bought the colt for 4,000 guineas at last year's Tattersalls December Foal Sale.

"He has been very straightforward, he has never given us a problem. He came into prep and just blossomed," said Geraldine Hegarty. "My husband David chose him, he loves a really good-walking horse and his walk just said it all."

The session topper was just one of two lots to sell for six figures with a colt by New Bay (Dubawi) selling to Joe Foley for 100,000 when offered by Baroda Stud. He was catalogued as Lot 1602.

Australian spend at Park Paddocks continued on Thursday with Kern Lillingston, John Foote Bloodstock and Roll The Dice racing buying a colt by Nathaniel (Galileo) for 60,000 guineas. Sold by New England Stud as Lot 1328, the colt is out of the stakes placed mare Foundation Filly (Lando).

The second and final session of Book 3 will be held on Friday.
