Manduro mare Coplow, dam of 1000 Guineas (Group 1) winner Billesdon Brook, topped the second day of the Tattersalls December Mare Sale on Tuesday when bought on a single bid for 2,100,000gns by MV Magnier.

Offered as lot 1834 the 10-year-old mare was sold in foal to Kingman.

"She has done it already, let's hope she can continue. She is in foal to a hot stallion," said Magnier. "I imagine she will go to Galileo, but I will have to speak with the lads."

She was consigned by Stowell Hill Stud’s Jeanette McCreery whose partner Bob died in 2016.

"I found that more nerve-wracking beforehand. She was very popular all around the ring. We have so many members of the family that something had to be sold to keep it all running,” said McCreery."

"It is a great credit to Bob, but credit must go to the Hannons who have made this family."

Invincible Spirit mare Big Brothers Pride, who was a wildcard entry to the Tattersalls December Mares Sale, was purchased by BBA Ireland’s Eamonn Reilly for 975,000gns after he saw off the determined effort of Northern Farms’ Shunsuke Yoshida.

Sold by Tweenhills Farm as agent as lot 1793c, the Group 3 winning Big Brothers Pride is a half-sister to the Group 1 winner Poly Dream as well as the multiple stakes winner Evaporation.

"She is for a US buyer and she goes to America," said Reilly. "She won't race on and will be syndicated to breed. She is from bloodlines that rarely come onto the market."

Another 23 lots sold for 500,000gns or more on Tuesday on a day that saw 183 of the 225 lots offered sold at a clearance rate of 81%. The average was down 10% on the 2018 figure from 218,126gns last year to 195,407gns whilst the median fell 18% from 110,000gns to 90,000gns. The aggregate was down 16% from 42,534,600gns a year ago to 35,759,500gns.

Australian purchasers continued to be active during the second day with Aquis Farm buying stakes winning Redoute’s Choice mare Lilac Fairy for 300,000gns. The 4-year-old mare was sold in foal to Siyouni.

Astute Bloodstock and Taormina Lodge went to 105,000gns for Elusive Quality mare One Last Night while John Foote Bloodstock and Cambridge Stud struck for 2 lots, buying 3-year-old Australia filly Elisheba for 100,000gns and another 3-year-old daughter of Australia in Semillon for 130,000gns.

Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock and Badgers Bloodstock bought Galileo mare Susan B Anthony for 560,000gns. Sold in foal to War Front, the 4-year-old mare is out of stakes winner Looking Back making her a sister to multiple Group 1 winner and sire Rip Van Winkle.

Sun Bloodstock Racing secured New Approach mare Quite Sharp for 85,000gns. The 5-year-old mare ran twice at 3 and was sold in foal to Dark Angel. She is out of the Coronation Stakes (Group 1) winner Balisada who has produced 7 winners.

The sale continues on Wednesday.
