A Kingman filly topped the final day. The fourth and final day of the Tattersalls December Mare Sale on Thursday was topped by Winterkoenigin who was bought for 22,000gns by Badgers Bloodstock.

Sold by Ringfort Stud, the 3-year-old placed daughter of Kingman is out of the stakes-placed Shamardal mare Wittgenstein.

"She goes to Ireland," said Tom Pritchard-Gordon of Badgers Bloodstock. "We have made no plans as yet. She is by Kingman and her half-sister Reducta ran a big race in Del Mar recently, hopefully she can go on and get some black-type.

" Overall on Thursday 74 lots sold for 277,300gns at an average of 3,747gns and median of 2,500gns. The sale overall saw 668 of the 812 lots offered for a total of 57,790,900gns, an average of 86,513gns and median 27,000gns.

The number sold was down 8% on the 2018 figure when 728 lots sold for 60,712,100gns with the 2019 aggregate down 5% from the figure a year ago. The median was down 4% on the 2018 figure whilst the median showed the biggest decline, falling 32% down from 27,000gns last year.

A total of 27 lots sold for 500,000gns or more with the top price coming for dam of 1000 Guineas (Group 1) winner Coplow who was bought by MV Magnier for 2,100,000gns.

Australian and New Zealand buyers were active during the week including Aquis Farm who spent 1,050,000gns on 2 lots while Dean Hawthorne and Badgers Bloodstock combined to buy 2 lots for 670,000gns. Astute Bloodstock / Taormina Lodge, Belmont Bloodstock, Cambridge Stud / John Foote Bloodstock, McKeever Bloodstock / Cornerstone Stud, McKeever Bloodstock / Paul Willets, Tweenhills / Widden and Twin Hills Stud all struck during the 4 day sale.

At the conclusion of the 2019 Tattersalls December Mares Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

“We have been fortunate to have had some outstanding December catalogues in recent years and it may be fair to say that the 2019 renewal lacked a little of the usual depth, but buyers from throughout the world have competed fiercely for the best fillies and mares all week, and we can reflect on a very positive end to the Tattersalls sales season.

"A record breaking 27 lots sold for 500,000 guineas or more and the unprecedented 81 lots which made 200,000 guineas or more are a very clear indication of the sustained demand for the best European breeding stock and for the enduring appeal of the Tattersalls December Sale."
