Peter Moody, who sensationally announced he intends to apply for his training license on Saturday, made a splash in the sales ring on at Karaka on Tuesday when he went to NZ$500,000 filly by Darley's stalwart sire Exceed And Excel (Danehill).

Moody is set to make a dramatic return to training later this year with plans for a boutique stable near Melbourne.

Catalogued as Lot 614, the filly is out of the unraced Bernardini (A.P. Indy) mare Gallwitz, who is herself out of Listed winner Hold To Ransom (Red Ransom) making her half-sister to Group 3 winner and Group 1 placed Retrieve (Rahy) and the Listed winners Reparations (Exceed And Excel) and Abduction (Street Cry).

"She's a lovely filly and she had great quality about her," said Moody. "Trelawney Stud are a great nursery and are a farm that I have had a lot of success with over the years."

Moody quit the training ranks having quit when he was suspended for six months in March 2016 when found guilty of unintentionally administering Lidari (Acclamation) with excessive levels of cobalt before the 2014 Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and despite announcing his intention to re-apply for his licence he was unwilling to say whether he would train this filly.

"We will have a chat about that later, I'm not even a licensed racehorse trainer at the minute, but there wouldn't a racehorse trainer who wouldn't be happy to see that filly walk through the gates," said Moody.

"She was just a really nice filly with really good quality. She is going to make her own pedigree because she's a bit light on the first dam, but I hope she stamps her own authority and doesn't have to rely on family members to fly the flag for her."

Moody has been active over the three days of trade during Book 1 at Karaka and said he thought it had been a very good sale and breeders had been repaid for their faith, but admitted the New Zealand Bloodstock industry could benefit from a rejuvenation.

"It is unbelievably resilient industry where we can see fire, flood or famine the world over and in this part of the world the industry has continued to grow," said Moody.

"You have to accept the fact that breeders are a significant part of this industry and they race a lot of horses so you can't begrudge them getting the dollars the sales rings it's what the makes the world go round.

"New Zealand Bloodstock I have always said publicly that it is the best sales complex in the world and the New Zealand product has been consistently good for my entire career and I will continue to comeback.

"Australasia has a booming industry, sadly in New Zealand the racing needs a rejuvenation and so does part of their bloodstock probably does to. But the farms continue to breed winners and have done it for a long time and continue to do so you can continue you come back here."

This was another outstanding result for Trelawney Stud who have sold 11 yearlings for an aggregate of NZ$3,460,000 and an average of NZ$314,545 to put them at the head of the table of leading vendors by average (with three or more lots sold) and Brent Taylor was quick to divert praise on to his staff.

"Our staff have been fantastic and I am very proud of them because we have had an outstanding sale," said Taylor. "Not sure if it is a record but an outstanding sale."

Bruce Perry purchased the mare Gallwitz on behalf of Trelawney at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale for $320,000 in foal to Medaglia D'Oro (El Prado), with the subsequent foal selling to Cambridge Stud for NZ$100,000 at last years Karaka sale.

"I bought the mare from Darley when she was in foal to Medaglia d'Oro," said Taylor. "I loved the family but I had one or two doubts about Bernadini, however, I have since been 'put right' by a few people. His mares have produced something like ten Group winners.

"I planned the mating with Exceed And Excel and she is a truly beautiful filly.

"The mare has a filly foal at foot by Savabeel and is back in foal to him."
