A filly by Yarradale Stud stallion War Chant (Danzig) topped the Book 1 session of the Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale on Monday when bought by Attunga Bloodstock and Clarke Bloodstock for $240,000.

Catalogued as Lot 166 from the draft of Willow Dale Farm, the filly is the eighth foal out of the Listed-placed mare Brocky's Ace (Surtee) who has produced Group 2 winner Quilista (Scandal Keeper) and Listed winner Red Can Man (Gingerbread Man).

Having missed in 2018, Brocky's Ace was covered again last October by War Chant. He stood for a fee of $11,000 (inc GST) in 2019 and has produced 43 stakes winners to date headed by three Group / Grade 1 winners including William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Silent Sedition.

"We actually paid a little bit more than we thought we would have to pay," Attunga Bloodstock's Brian Nutt said.

"But I really liked the filly. I actually sold Quilista at the National Broodmare Sale in Queensland and I really liked her and there's plenty of upside going forward.

"Having paid a little bit more - but I'm really happy with the one that I've got," Nutt added.

The top priced colt on Monday was a son of the first crop of Newgate Farm's Winning Rupert (Written Tycoon) who was bought by Matt Laurie Racing for $200,000.

"I thought he was a standout," Laurie said.

"I obviously had to bid pretty hard to get him.

"He's a really forward, well muscled and well balanced colt - a typical early looking style of horse.

"His physical attributes really matched his page and I'm thrilled to get him," Laurie added.

Offered by Western Breeders Alliance (Darling View Stud) as Lot 161, the colt is the second foal out of winning mare Bitter Twist (California Dane) who is a half-sister to Listed winner Hoegaarden (Flying Spur) being out of stakes-placed mare Inspect (Integra). The colt's third dam is Tempergaze (Temperence Hill), dam of multiple Group 1 winner Intergaze (Integra).

The first crop of Winning Rupert has proved popular in the ring so far this year with all 17 yearlings offered by him sold at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for a total of $2,631,000 at an average of $154,764 and top price of $425,000.

Western Breeders Alliance (Darling View Stud) were also responsible for selling a filly by So You Think (High Chaparral) who was bought for $170,000 by McEvoy Mitchell Racing and Belmont Bloodstock.

"She just had class," said Tony McEvoy.

"She oozed class. She had a great honesty about her, a great willingness. Her purpose was incredible and she's a good mover. She was a powerful big girl and the colts will struggle to give her two kilos, I can tell you."

Offered as Lot 56, the filly is out of winning mare Magical Belle (Blackfriars) who has produced three winners from four foals to race including the Magic Millions WA 3YO Trophy (RL, 1200m) winner Enchanted Dream (Patronize).

War Chant was responsible for three of the top five lots to sell on Monday with a filly by him selling for $180,000 to Thoroughbred Owners Association and Sports Trust and a colt bought by Parnham's Racing Stable for $170,000. Both lots were offered by Yarradale Stud and the colt was the first through the ring as Lot 5

He is out of the once-raced Viscount (Quest For Fame) mare Diamonds'n'dreams who has produced two winners to date and is herself out of the Group 2-winning mare Dreamworks (Maroof).

Later in the day the filly was offered as Lot 133. She is out of Verse (Quest For Fame), the dam of seven winners to date headed by Lamasery (Commands), while her second dam is Loyal Lyric (Sovereign red), the dam of Anthems (Palace Music) and Vocalist (Bluebird), herself the dam of multiple Group 1 winner Yell (Anabaa). This is also the family of Written Tycoon (Iglesia).

War Chant finished the day as the leading sire by aggregate and second leading sire by average (with three or more lots sold) behind Zoustar (Northern Meteor). Overall on Monday eight lots by War Chant sold for $1,025,000 at an average of $128,125 whilst the Widden Stud-based Zoustar had three lots sell for $450,000 at an average of $150,000.
