Bought for NZ$58,000 on Gavelhouse Plus
New Zealand Bloodstock's annual South Island Sale saw its first-ever online session conclude on Gavelhouse Plus.
Prominent agent Phill Cataldo was busy throughout the sale, buying four yearlings including the top-priced lot early on in the session.
Purchased on behalf of an Australian buyer, the Reliable Man (Dalakhani) filly is the first foal out of Listed winner Lady Zafira (Iffraaj) and was bought for $58,000 from the draft of Canterbury-based Ripple Creek. The filly's third dam is Centrepiece (Centaine) who produced five winners including the Group 3 winner Exinite (Lord Ballina) and Listed winner Vitrinite (Lord Ballina). Further back this is the family of dual Group 1 winner Royal Magic (Lord Ballina). The filly was catalogued as Lot 2.
"She is a very well-grown, strong and athletic filly," said Cataldo.
"I like Reliable Man… I was involved with the purchase of Kinane (who is also by Reliable Man) at the 2018 Ready to Run Sale.
"He is a current Group Three winner in Australia and is going really well, so he definitely appeals to their market."
While photos and videos are essential for buyers, it comes hand in hand with the inspection process, something Cataldo found worthwhile when purchasing from this Sale.
After pre-sale inspections of each yearling offered, he was pleased with the quality of yearlings he saw.
"It was really beneficial travelling to the South Island with Danny Rolston a couple of weeks ago," he said.
"I was happy with my purchases and I thought the quality of the stock offered in the sale was good.
"The vendors did a really good job with their line-up of horses."
Cataldo also bought a Iffraaj (Zafonic) filly for NZ$35,000, a Zacinto (Dansili) colt for NZ$30,000 and a Ghibellines (Shamardal) filly for NZ$13,500.
The second most expensive lot to sell was a Burgundy (Redoute's Choice) colt who made NZ$42,000. Catalogued as Lot 19 he is the fifth foal out of the winner Precious (Stravinsky) who has produced two winners to date including the stakes placed filly Upscale (Tavistock).
