Simon Crisford has taken advantage of the new rulings on co-trainers in the UK and entered a training partnership with his son Ed this season, and they look to have gained an exciting new recruit in the shape of a colt by Arrowfield Stud shuttler Shalaa (Invincible Spirit) after he was purchased by Blandford Bloodstock’s Richard Brown for 250,000gns.

Shalaa has made a good start to his career as a stallion, siring two winners, while his son Saeiqa ran a brilliant race to finish third in the Coventry Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at Royal Ascot last week.

"This horse did an exceptional breeze, in every way - visually, on time and stride, it really ticked all the boxes," said Brown.

"Shalaa has made a good start, we like the stallion. His runners so far look as though they are going to be seven furlong / miler types. This mare has done it already.

"We are delighted to have bought this horse, he was the one we highlighted early. He goes to Simon Crisford.”

Catalogued as Lot 68, the Malcolm Bastard-consigned colt is out of winning mare Lauren Louise, making him a half-brother to Group 2 winner Blaine (Avonbridge) and Listed scorer Bogart (Bahamian Bounty) and a further two winners.

Shalaa’s first yearlings in Australia were well received earlier in the year, with 59 yearlings selling for a total of $9,786,500 at an average of $165,872 this year, while a colt who was purchased for $600,000 by John Sadler was the most expensive of his first crop to sell in the southern hemisphere.

"A fantastic sale, we are delighted, especially as we were not sure coming into today,” Bastard said. “He came to me in January and has always worked well. He is going to a good trainer."

Toby Barker, who bred the colt, said the colt was kept for the two-year-old instead of being offered as a yearling because he had been a bit backward early on.

"He was a bit backward, so we decided to wait. Malcolm has done a great job," said Barker, adding: "We liked Shalaa before he retired to stud. She has been a phenomenal mare for us and I just try to keep out of her way!"
