New Zealand bloodstock agent Andrew Williams said he had been impressed with Hellbent's (I Am Invincible) first crop of foals and as a result he was happy to go to $140,000 for a colt by the young Yarraman Park sire.

Williams, who was buying on behalf of new syndicate Spyglass, said the colt had caught the eye during the on farm inspections at Segenhoe in the Hunter Valley.

"Spyglass is a mixed syndicate put together with a collection of Aussies and Kiwis, trying to buy a few quality horses in this market,'' Williams said.

"We saw him on the farm at Segenhoe initially and he made the second list to go back and have a look at him at the complex and he really caught our eye.

"He's a sharp looking horse, moderate size, good action. I am really like these Hellbents. They are great-shaped horses and I'm really quite excited by him.

"I thought Yarraman did a fantastic marketing play on him by going to the farms with Matt Scown and he really caught my attention.

"What's been on the complex here has been very nice as well. He's quite an exciting horse being a son of I Am Invincible, so you never know."

On the market, Williams said: "Good horses are making money if they're by the right stallions and are passing x-rays and things like that. There's a whole lot of things we try and jump through in terms of stallions, pedigree, types, x-rays, walk.

"It's not easy and that's the frustrating thing in lacking the foresight in what the industry or the world will be like (next year). I just think we've got to buy the right horses because they can be raced and syndicated whatever the plan is."

Catalogued as Lot 50, the colt is out of Group 2 winner Sister Madly (Redoute's Choice) - who was also finished second in the Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and she was purchased at the 2011 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale for $1,000,000. Her three progeny who have sold in the ring as either a weanling or yearling have made $1,540,000.

Sister Madly herself is a half-sister to dual Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Silent Witness (El Moxie) and the dam of Group 2 winner Empress Rock (Fastnet Rock) and Listed scorer Fiera Vista (Exceed And Excel).

Segenhoe's Brian Clarke was pleased with how the colt sold and said the price-tag exceeded all their expectations.

"Hellbent has his first lot of weanlings here at the sale and Sister Madly is obviously a Group 2 winner who was Group 1-placed by Redoute's Choice who is obviously a top broodmare sire," said Clarke.

"He's really nice with a great shape, precocious a real two-year-old sprinting type.

"We were really happy with the price we got and good luck to those who purchased him.

"It's very hard to know as there's obviously a lot of buyers who can't get to the complex, but he was very popular with parades, so we were pretty confident he'd sell well but that was definitely above our expectations, so we're delighted."

At the close of trade on day 1 Inglis reported that 131 weanlings had sold at a clearance rate of 70 per cent, while the first day finished with an aggregate of $4,421,000. The average was recorded as $33,748 and the median was $20,000.

Day 2 action again begins from 10am on Thursday, with lots 251-385 being offered.
