The familiar team of Anthony Stroud and Godolphin made their presence felt at the Arqana Deauville Select Sale on Wednesday as they went to €620,000 for a filly by Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) from the Baroda Stud draft.

Catalogued as Lot 61, the filly is a daughter of Almased Cup (Gr 3, 2200m) winner Daytona Bay (Motivator), who is herself a daughter of Listed scorer Daytona (Lando), making her a half-sister to Dallas Affair (Soldier Hollow).

Daytona herself is herself a daughter of Daytona Beach (Konigsstuhl), who in turn produced Group 1 winner Donaldson (Lando) and Duke Of Hearts (Halling).

“She is a very beautiful filly, very athletic with a very beautiful model,” said Stroud. “We have already had a lot of success with Dubawi.

“There was a lot of interest in the filly so we are very happy. We are delighted to be here in Deauville.”

A pair of colts by Ballylinch Stud stalwart Lope De Vega (Shamardal) proved popular on the first day of the three-day auction making an aggregate of €900,000, headed by a colt who was purchased for €480,000 by Chauvigny Global Equine - who was buying on behalf of a Japanese client.

“He is a son of Lope de Vega, a confirmed stallion from a very lively family that we know well in France,” said Chauvigny Global Equine’s Sébastien Desmontils.

“We are very happy. I bought it for a Japanese customer. We do not yet know where he will go to training, we will decide after the breaking-in and according to the other foals that we have bought but he will stay in France.”

Catalogued as Lot 23, the colt is out of one time-winning Teofilo (Galileo) mare Attractive Lady.

Attractive Lady herself is a daughter of Lumiere Rouge (Indian Ridge) - the dam of Grade 1 winner Desert Blanc (Desert Style) and Listed scorer Lumiere Noire (Dashing Blade) - the dam of Somerville Tattersalls Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) winner Witchta (No Nay Never), who also finished second in this season’s 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m).

Later on in the afternoon, Mick Kinane - working on behalf of the Hong Kong Jockey Club - outlayed €420,000 for another son of the former shuttler Lope De Vega.

Catalogued as Lot 93, the colt is out of Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Foreign Legionary, making him a half-brother to CS Hayes Memorial Cup (Listed, 1600m) winner Mantastic (Fastnet Rock).

Foreign Legionary herself is out of Listed winner Renashaan (Darshaan), who in turn produced Group 3 winner Medecis (Machiavellian) and multiple Group 1 winner Alexander Goldrun (Gold Away) - the dam of Listed scorer Goldrush (Frankel).

“It was my favourite, he is a very beautiful foal,” said Kinane. “We hope he will be a good racehorse.”

Qatar’s racing manager David Redvers was also active at the Arqana Deauville Select Sale, making a play for a colt by Coolmore’s peerless sire Galileo (Sadler’s Wells), eventually taking the colt home for €450,000.

Catalogued as Lot 103, the colt hails from one of the best known families in the European stud book, being out of Group 3 winner Golden Valentine (Dalakhani).

Golden Valentine herself is a daughter of Group 3 winner Gold Round (Caerleon), making her a half-sister to fellow Group 3 winner Goldwaki (Dalakhani) and Listed scorer Spectaculaire (Spectrum).

Meanwhile, the colt’s third dam Born Gold (Blushing Groom) is the blue-hen mare, who is best known for producing multiple Group 1-winning champion mare Goldikova (Galileo), fellow elite level scorer Galikova (Galileo) and Group 3-winning trio Gold Sound (Green Tune), Gold Luck (Redoute’s Choice) and Gold Round (Caerleon).

“I bought it for a new partnership,” said Redvers. “He comes from one of the best French studs. I had been to see him at Les Monceaux six weeks ago and this is the one I preferred. I am delighted, he is a colt full of quality and very well born.”

At the close of trade on the first day, Arqana reported that 92 lots sold at a clearance rate of 73 per cent with an aggregate of € 13,592,000. The closing average was € 147,739, while the median held at € 115,000.

At day 1 of the 2019 Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale 228 lots sold for €42,789,000 at an average of €187,671 and median of €125,000.
