A colt by Coolmore Australia shuttler American Pharoah (Pioneerof The Nile) sold for US$1.25 million to Speedway Stables at the Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearling Showcase in Lexington on Thursday.

Offered by Denali Stud as agent for Bayne and Christina Welker and catalogued as Lot 400, the colt is out of the stakes-winning Victory Gallop (Cryptoclearance) mare Swingit making him a half-brother to five winners including the Grade 1 placed colt Neolithic (Harlan’s Holiday) and Travel Column (Frosted) who recently broke her maiden in impressive style. She had been bought for US$850,000 at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale.

Bloodstock agent Marette Farrell signed the ticket on behalf of Speedway Stables after outbidding Coolmore.

"We just thought he was an absolutely stunning horse," Farrell told Bloodhorse.com.

"We were the underbidder on his half sister last year. I have seen this horse on the farm and knew how much his connections thought of him. Bob Baffert is going to train him, and he loved him.

“We're thrilled to get him, and we think he's a really special horse. He's by an up-and-coming sire, and the mare has already produced what looks like a couple of really good horses and a very exciting filly. That's what Speedway wants and what Bob Baffert is looking for.”

Speedway Stables is owned by Houston oil and gas partners Peter Fluor and Kane Weiner whose fathers had raced horses together previously. The first two horses they bought together were at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton November Breeding Stock Sale when they spent US$2.5 million on two lots; Hard Not To Like and Leigh Count.

The sire of ten stakes winners to date in his first two northern hemisphere-bred crops, the colt becomes the 20th seven figure yearling sell at public auction by the Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.
