A colt by Siyouni (Pivotal) topped the first day of the Arqana October Yearling Sale in Deauville on Monday when bought by Al Shaqab Racing for €525,000 on a day when six lots sold for €200,000 or more.

Offered as Lot 157 from the draft of Monceaux, the colt is the second foal out of winning mare Prudente (Dansili) who is a sister to Listed winner Prudenzia, dam of Mackinnon Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Magic Wand (Galileo) and Irish Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f) scorer Chicquita (Montjeu).

He’s a magnificent colt. The whole team loved him from the moment we saw him. As well as his conformation, he has one of the best pedigrees in the catalogue. We don’t know where he’ll go into training - we’ll decide at a later stage,” said Paul Hensey of Al Shaqab.

Al Shaqab finished the day as the leading buyer having spent €1,249,000 on 12 yearlings.

Daniel Cole purchased the second most expensive lot and top priced filly of the day when he went to €450,000 for a filly by Sea The Stars (Cape Cross). Offered by Etreham as Lot 110B the filly is out of Listed placed Matauri Pearl (Hurricane Run) making her a half-sister to Grade 2 winning two-year-old filly Aunt Pearl (Lope De Vega). Further back this is the family of late champion sire Monsun (Konigsstuhl).

She’s an exceptional filly, said Hiroo Shimizu. I’ve bought her for the same connections as Midlife Crisis. She’s compact, and has the physique to run at two. We’ll give her some time. She reminds me of Deep Impact in her attitude and in the way she moves, she almost floats,” said Chantilly-based trainer Daniel Cole was bidding on behalf of Japanese owner Shigeo Nomura.

Also on Monday a filly by Darley shuttler Exceed And Excel (Danehill) sold for €280,000 to Stroud Coleman. Siyouni finished the day as the leading sire by average with 11 of his progeny sold for €1,612,000 at an average of €146,545.

Overall on Monday 161 of the 203 lots offered sold for €9,341,000 at a clearance rate of 79 per cent. With a different sales calendar this year comparison statistics are not valid.
