Larry Best’s Oxo Equine were responsible for buying the two top priced lots on the first day of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock on Monday, with their purchases headed by Grade 1 winner Concrete Rose (Twirling Candy) with the operation going to US$1,950,000 to secure the four-year-old mare.

Catalogued as Lot 216, the mare was offered by Lane's End, who were acting as agent for Ashbrook Farm and BBN Racing, the mare landed the Belmont Oaks (Gr 1, 10f) in 2019 and was only beaten once in her seven start career, which saw her accumulate US$1,218,650 in career prize-money.

Further back the mare is from the family of Grade 2 winner Lovers Knot (Invincible Spirit).

Earlier on in the day, Oxo Equine secured Indian Miss (Indian Charlie), the dam of champion Mitole (Eskendereya), for US$1.9 million from the draft of Hill ‘n’ Dale.

Offered as Lot 32 and in foal to Spendthrift Farm’s star stallion Into Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday), the mare has also produced two other winners.

Indian Miss herself is out of Listed winner Glacken’s Girl (Smoke Glacken), making her a sister to Grade 2 winner Live Lively (Medaglia d’Oro).

Glacken’s Girl herself is a daughter of stakes-placed mare Lady Diplomat (Silver Deputy), who also produced stakes-placed duo Banker’s Buy (Distorted Humor) and City Dweller (Carson City).

A total of eight lots realised US$1 million or more during the open session of the sale and the third highest-priced lot of the day was one-time winner Cherokee Maiden (Distorted Humor), selling to Emmanuel de Seroux for US$1.85 million on behalf of Grand Farm.

Catalogued as Lot 212 and offered by  Bedouin Bloodstock, the filly is out of the champion mare Folklore (Tiznow), is the granddam of  Contrail (Deep Impact), this year's undefeated winner of the Japanese Triple Crown.

The pedigree was subject to a significant update over the weekend when Essential Quality (Tapit), who is out Delightful Quality (Elusive Quality) - a stakes-placed half sister to Folklore - won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (Gr 1, 8.5f) at Keeneland.

"She's a very nice broodmare prospect for us, and the pedigree's improving so much; there's more action in the family every day," de Seroux said. "She's going to go to Japan, probably. They will decide in the next few days."

Bedouin Bloodstock’s Neale Carke was happy with the sale.

"We're very happy with that price," said Neal Clarke, partner in Bedouin Bloodstock. "It was more than we thought and the timing was just perfect. We've been very, very happy with what we've done today, but we have a ways to go. We're not going to rest on our laurels just yet."

Last year’s Santa Anita American Oaks (Gr 1, 10f) winner Lady Prancealot - who is by Cornerstone Stud shuttler Sir Prancealot (Tamayuz) - was another to break the US$1 million barrier during the opening session of the breeding stock sale after Shadai Farm paid US$1.6 million for the Taylor Made Sales-consigned mare.

Catalogued as Lot 48, the mare was most recently seen running fourth in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (Gr 1, 9.5f) at Keeneland on Saturday.

Lady Prancealot landed five of her 23 career starts, which saw her accumulate £575,837 in career prize-money earnings. The mare is from humble beginnings, having been purchased for €9,500 at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale, but her star has continued to rise throughout her career.

She is out of the unraced Haatef (Danzig) mare Naqrah and hails from the family of Group 2 winner Baqah (Bahhare) - the dam of Group 3 scorer Almanaar (Dubawi).

However there was disappointment during the first session of the sale, with Con Te Partiro (Scat Daddy) - winner of last season’s Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m) and Queen of the Turf Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) - failing to make her reserve and eventually passing in for US$1.9 million.
