Gold Coast-based trainer Gillian Heinrich - who buys under the Winners Bloodstock banner - is not a familiar name on the purchasers sheet at the Magic Millions Gold Coast 2YOs In Training Sale, but the trainer said her and her husband Hoss were willing to make an exception and take the plunge into the two-year-old market after falling for a colt by Widden Stud-based stallion Nicconi (Biaconi), for whom they secured for $280,000.

Presented for sale by KBL Thoroughbreds and catalogued as Lot 203, the colt was purchased by Breeze-Up Bloodstock for $140,000 at the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale and he stopped the clock at 10.59 seconds for his breeze, which impressed the Heinrichs.

“We don’t normally buy out of this sale, we always have a look and don’t often buy, but we made an exception for him because he was just a standout,” said Heinrich.

“He is an absolutely sensational type. He was a little bit of a colt, but when they were parading him behaved very well. Obviously he breezed really well and has everything that we like. We looked at him three or four times today and everytime we looked at him he looked better.”

Heinrich said they paid over what they expected the colt to make, but they were willing to go the distance for the youngster.

“I thought maybe $200,000 - $220,000 may have pulled him up, but he obviously a couple of people were on him and really liked him and when other people are on them you’re going to have to pay more,” said Heinrich.

“We will take him home now and have a look at him tomorrow and go from there.”

The colt is the first foal out of dual-winning Choisir (Danehill Dancer) mare Life’s Zerprise, while she is one of six winners out of five-time winner Zerprisal (Zerpour).

Further back this is the same family as Listed winner Prima Cornice (Vain).

KBL Thoroughbreds sold 15 lots for total receipts of $820,500 at an average of $54,700.

Nicconi finished up the day as the leading sire by average (with three or more lots sold), selling three lots for an aggregate $430,000 at an average of $143,333.
