In bloodstock timing is everything and Shelby Cobra’s (Toronado) victory in the The Amanda Elliot (Listed, 1400m) at Flemington on Saturday could not have come round at a better time with her dam Segenhoe Valley (Dane Shadow) catalogued for the Inglis November (Early) Online Sale. The mare did not disappoint when the bidding came to a close on Wednesday, with Seamus Mills landing the final blow to secure the mare for $325,000 who was catalogued as Lot 136

“I was really impressed by Shelby Cobra’s win on Saturday and then I saw the ad which motivated me to go and inspect her and the filly at Riverbank Farm,” Mills said.

“It’s great buying when you look at the family, it’s current and I think it will keep exploding, I don’t know how many mares produce a Stakes winner from their first three foals.

“I said to my clients that they should recognise how rare it is for a full sister to a Stakes winner to come up for public sale like this and you get the eight-year-old mum as part of a package – it was too good of an opportunity to miss.

“Plans for both the filly and Segenhoe Valley are open at this stage, ideally she’ll be covered this weekend but by which stallion I’m not sure, I’m open to suggestions!”

Segenhoe Valley was offered on Inglis Digital by Queensland-based hobby breeder Laurelle Owen, who purchased the mare for a mere $5,000 at the 2018 Inglis Great Southern Sale.

“The only reason I bought this mare is because I saw Shelby Cobra go through as a weanling at the same sale for $70,000 to Maluka Thoroughbreds,” Owen said.

“I’ve been following Shelby Cobra, I saw him make $130,000 at last year’s Inglis Premier Sale and started receiving reports that he was showing lots of promise in the stable, so I rang Russell Osborne at Riverbank and told him I wanted to send the dam to Toronado and everything since has just fallen into place.

“It’s a credit to Russell and Caroline Osborne at Riverbank Farm, they’ve done a fabulous job looking after my girls then ensuring we got the right certificates completed to upload to this mare’s listing, plus videos and photographs completed (by Digital Media Creations).

“I’ve worked at Boxsells Real Estate in Maleny since 2007 but have been involved in the breeding industry for 50 years, only with one or two mares for the most part,” Owen said.

“It’s been a punt with plenty of highs and lows, I’ve had a few lows this breeding season so when the mare foaled such a lovely filly in late October and then Shelby Cobra accepted for the Stakes race last Saturday, I felt the timing was perfect to offer her on Inglis Digital.”

Segenhoe Valley (Dane Shadow) is out of dual winning Zabeel (Sir Tristram) mare Scone.

Scone herself is out of Nothings Secret (Secreto), whose 14 winners are headed by Listed scorer Sunrise Silence (Squill), while her five-time winning daughter Discretion (Canny Lad) is the dam of Group 3 winner Royal Discretion (Royal Academy) and Listed winner Roulettes (Flying Spur), who in turn produced Group 3 winner and now Telemon Thoroughbreds-based sire Sun City (Zoustar) and Listed winner Parlophone (I Am Invincible).

Meanwhile, Nothings Secret is also the grandam of 2014 ARC Easter Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Albany Reunion (Fastnet Rock) and Listed-winning duo Fast Dragon (Fastnet Rock) and Rock Robster (Fastnet Rock).

Other results included three-year-old gelding I Am Swerving (I Am Invincible) selling to Singapore-based Jason Lim Racing for $65,000, while Soul Mama (Charge Forward), a full-sister to multiple Group 1 winner Sunlight’s (Zoustar) dam Solar Charged, was bought by Kim Alderton for $60,000.

The November (Early) catalogue grossed $1.57 million, while the clearance rate was 84 per cent.
