Trio sell for US$300,000 at Keeneland

A trio of horses - Quality Heat (Quality Road), Sex Symbol (Uncle Mo) and a weanling colt from the first crop of former Coolmore Stud shuttler Mendelssohn (Scat Daddy)  – each sold for US$300,000 to come out on top of Thursday’s fourth session of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

The US$300,000 Mendelssohn weanling was purchased by Larry Best’s OXO Equine and he was consigned by Four Star Sales. Catalogued as Lot 1269, the colt is out unraced mare Abuntia (Olmodavor), who is herself a half-sister to Grade 2 winner St. Joe Bay (Saint Anddan). 

The colt also hails from the same family as multiple Grade 1 winner Copelan (Tri Jet). 

Meanwhile, both Quality Heat and Sex Symbol and were consigned by Bluewater Sales with Quality Heat purchased by Springbord Farm, while Green Lantern Stables and Patrick Masson bought Sex Symbol. 

Catalogued as Lot 1149, one-time winner and stakes-placed Quality Heat is out of Rushen Heat (Unusual Suspect), making her a sister to Grade 2 winner Frank Conversation. 

Rushen Heat herself is a sister to Grade 1 winners Golden Doc A and Unusual Suspect, who also landed the 2021 Werribee Cup (Listed, 2600m). 

Sex Symbol, who was offered as Lot 1183 and carrying her first foal by City of Light (Qaulity Road), is out of Grade 1 winner Icon Project (Empire Maker), making her a half-sister to Grade 2 scorer Fashion Business (Frankel). 

Icon Project herself is out of Grade 1 winner La Gueriere (Lord At War) - the dam of Grade 2 winner and now sire Lasting Approval (With Approval), while she is the grandam of fellow Grade 2 winner now sire Munnings (Speightstown).

At the close of trade on Thursday, Keeneland reported that 227 horses sold for an aggregate of US$13,153,000 on Thursday, at an average of US$57,943, up two per cent from the corresponding session in 2019 while the median finished at US$42,000, down seven per cent from the 2019 figure.

Cumulatively through four sessions of the ten-day auction, 748 horses grossed US$115,681,000, for an average of US$154,654 and a median of US$90,000.
