At the close of trade on Wednesday, New Zealand Bloodstock reported 82 lots sold at a clearance rate of 69 per cent for an aggregate of NZ$7,615,500. With 27 per cent fewer horses sold this year compared to last year, the aggregate fell 29 per cent from the 2019 figure when 112 horses sold for NZ$10,789,500 at a clearance rate of 63 per cent.

The 2020 average of NZ$92,872 was down four per cent on the figure of NZ$96,335 a year ago whilst the median sits at NZ$51,250 after the first day of selling.

A total of ten lots sold for NZ$200,000 or more with one lot selling for more than NZ$500,000.

Understandably NZB managing director Andrew Seabrook was thrilled with the reception of NZB’s new digital platform.

“We were cautiously optimistic heading into today, although the response to our online bidding platform has exceeded our expectations.”

“45 per cent of today’s total turnover was secured from our international buyers using the platform, with Hong Kong leading the way and strong participation from Australia and Macau,” he said.

Bloodstock Sales Manager Danny Rolston was pleased with both the domestic and international participation throughout the day.

“We have done a lot of ground work and preparation, particularly engaging with our international buyers.

“We also know that our New Zealand-based agents have been increasingly busy inspecting on behalf of those who have been unable to attend the Sale and we would like to commend them for their extra efforts.

“It was great to see the Hong Kong market active, purchasing just shy of NZ$3,000,000 today and we are looking forward to another successful day of selling tomorrow.”

Domestic buyers were responsible for approximately 25 per cent of the market with Hong Kong-based purchasers spending NZ$2,760,000 on 16 lots (approximately 35 per cent of turnover). Whilst buyers from China (3 lots for NZ$170,000), Macau (3 lots for NZ$210,000), Malaysia (3 lots for (NZ$103,500), NSW (3 lots for NZ$295,000), QLD (1 lot for NZ$60,000), Singapore (1 lot for NZ$26,000) and VIC (19 lots for NZ$1,985,000) were all active on day one of the sale.
