Inglis has released the catalogue for their 2021 Classic Yearling Sale which will be held over three days at Riverside Stables from February 7 to 9. A total of 803 yearlings have been catalogued for the sale, 620 in the Main Book and 183 lots for the Highway Session while the $2 million Inglis Millennium (RL, 1100m) will be held at Randwick on February 6.

In all 108 sires are represented in next year’s Classic Yearling Sale catalogue including the progeny of Australia’s leading sires in Exceed And Excel (Danehill), Fastnet Rock (Danehill), I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), Pierro (Lonhro), Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), Written Tycoon (Iglesia) and Zoustar (Northern Meteor). The progeny of 22 first season sires are catalogued and includes yearlings by Almanzor (Wootton Bassett), Churchill (Galileo), Hellbent (I Am Invincible), Invader (Snitzel), Menari (Snitzel), Highland Reel (Galileo), Spieth (Thorn Park), Supido (Sebring) and Tosen Stardom (Deep Impact) while the sale will see drafts from 76 individual vendors.

“We are very pleased with how the catalogue has come together,” Sebastian Hutch Inglis general manager - bloodstock sales and marketing told Racing & Sports Bloodstock.

“There was very strong demand for places, but we have worked diligently with vendors to end up with a catalogue that is going to appeal to a very broad cross section of buyers. The quality in the catalogue means that buyers at every level with any sort of objective can find what they are looking for at Classic.”

Hutch said that the COVID-19 pandemic, despite throwing up a number of challenges for the 2020 sales, has led to a number of positive improvements.

“The pandemic has resulted in any number of challenges, but those challenges have also served as catalysts for improvements, innovation and ideas,” he said.

“Circumstances were a little cruel to us in terms of timing, but we were absolutely determined to make the best of the situation, so to end up with an average in excess of $300,000 at Easter, an increase in turnover at Chairman’s, a dramatically increased share of the weanling market and a record-breaking Ready2Race Sale that produced a 42 per cent jump in turnover year to year was very rewarding and a credit to the work that the whole team put in.

“Developing strong relationships with buyers is a year round exercise, but the pandemic has allowed us to learn a little more and it has been very heartening to see that buyers are still inclined to be active at a sale even if they cannot be present as long as certain information is provided.”

Recent graduates of the Classic Sale include Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Vow And Declare (Declaration Of War) and Everest (1200m) victor Classique Legend (Not A Single Doubt), who was sold at the 2017 sale from the Tyreel Stud draft for $400,000. However, Hutch notes the value on offer at the sale; Pippie (Written Tycoon) sold at the 2017 sale for $60,000, while Castelvecchio (Dundeel) was bought at the 2018 sale for $160,000 and Rubisaki (Rubick) sold at the 2018 sale for just $85,000 and has now won over $1.15 million in prize money.

“The Classic Yearling Sale produces more good horses at value prices than any other sale in Australia – the figures back that up – so while it doesn’t have the profile of some of the more ‘sexy’ sales, there is real substance to it and people who want to buy good race horses know they can’t afford to miss it,” said Hutch.

“The Easter yearling sale is the best sale in the southern hemisphere for two-year-olds in terms of both winners/runners and stakes winners/runners, but Classic isn’t far behind and more than holds its own.”

With ongoing uncertainty as to the continued impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on travel, Inglis will continue to work closely with State Government authorities and Aushorse as well as other external consultants to assist buyers

“Circumstances have meant that we’ve been working closely with State Government authorities, Aushorse and other external consultants on all things pandemic-related and this continues to be the case leading into next year,” said Hutch.

“Safe to say we will be making every effort to ensure that the sales will be a success and we have taken confidence from what we have been able to achieve in 2020. We have consulted extensively with buyers throughout the year and will continue to do so as we look to develop ways of facilitating their participation even if they can’t be here. It’s been very effective so far and we are working with vendors to enhance the buyer experience further for next year.”
