A colt by Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) was the headline act of the Tattersalls December Yearling Sale on Monday as Stroud Coleman Bloodstock went to 300,000gns for the Ashbrittle Stud-consigned yearling and he will now head into training with John Gosden.

Catalogued as Lot 160, the colt is out of 2013 Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f) winner Talent (New Approach), making him a half-brother to Group 2 winner Ambition (Dubawi).

Further back this is the same family as Listed winner Brindisi (Dr Fong).

Ashbrittle’s James Rowsell bred the colt with Mark Dixon, with the pair having bred and still owning Talent together.

Anthony Stroud said he expected the horse to take a bit of time to mature.

"He is a nice horse, he needs time, he is by a Derby winner and out of an Oaks winner, and his [half-brother] Ambition has done very well.”

Ashbrittle's manager Ginny Whales, who led up the colt, said he was deserving of that price-tag.

"He deserved the price he has got. He got a haematoma on his off-hind hence he missed his sale in October, but we are very pleased."

Earlier on in the day, it was another yearling by the Gilltown Stud-based sire as Hubie De Burgh teamed up with Norelands Stud’s Harry McCalmont to purchase a filly from the draft of Castlebridge Consignment for 260,000gns and he looks likely to also join Gosden’s Newmarket-based operation.

Catalogued as Lot 7 and bred by Lanwades Stud’s Kirsten Rausing the filly is out of Group 3-winning Sir Percy (Mark Of Esteem) mare Alla Speranza, making her a half-sister to 2019 City Of York Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) winner Shine So Bright (Oasis Dream).

Alla Speranza herself is a daughter of Listed winner Alvarita (Selkirk) and she is therefore a half-sister to Listed winner Altesse (Hernando) and Almiranta (Galileo), who is the dam of Group 2 winner Alyssa (Sir Percy), Group 3 scorer Alea Iacta (Invincible Spirit) as well as stakes winner Aloe Vera (Invincible Spirit).

Rausing said the filly picked up an injury before her intended sale at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, forcing them to sell the filly at the December Sale instead.

"She had a minor injury three or four weeks before Book 1, it was just a soft tissue injury, " said Rausing. "We sold her through The Castlebridge Consignment today and the team has been very helpful. For decades we have sold through Staffordstown, but it was a COVID-related decision and logistics. She was prepared at home and met Castlebridge here.

"I have the dam and the grand-dam both working for me, and two sisters of this filly and other females of the family – so I have many members and there is plenty to come from the family. She is a lovely filly and I wish the new buyer all the best of luck with her."

McCalmont, who was in charge of bidding, said:  "She is for a partnership between Norelands and Craig Bernick of Glenhill Stud. We had good yearling sales so we thought we'd invest. She is a lovely filly, by a stallion whom we love and from a wonderful family – it keeps on producing. Lanwades has the family, Coolmore has a branch and Juddmonte has a branch – we have one now too!"

As for training plans, McCalmont said: "I have already spoken to John Gosden and I will go and have another chat with him!"

Sea The Stars enjoyed a good day in the sales ring, selling four lots - three for six figures - for an aggregate of 702,000gns at an average of 175,500gns.
