A filly by Rosemont Stud shuttler Starspangledbanner (Choisir) - who was subject to a valuable pedigree update when her half-sister Alcohol Free (No Nay Never) landed the Cheveley Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) in September - repaid the faith of Knockatrina Stud’s Canice Farrell when she was purchased for 130,000gns at the Tattersalls December Yearling Sale on Monday.

Catalogued as Lot 119, the filly is out of winning Hard Spun (Danzig) mare Plying, who has also produced Listed winner Alexander James (Camelot).

Plying herself is a half-sister to stakes-placed Kissing Lights (Machiavellian), while further back this is the same family as Raise A Grand (Grand Lodge) and Listed scorer Weldnaas (Diesis).

The filly was pinhooked by Farrell for just €40,000 at the Goffs February Mixed Sale and Farrell said the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale had been the original aim but the filly was withdrawn due an over-reach, but said she had profited from the extra time.

"We were lucky enough that Alcohol Free came along," said Farrell. "This filly was entered in an earlier sale, but had an over-reach. She has benefitted anyway from the extra time she has had. She has a phenomenal temperament, and appetite!"

Daniel Creighton of Creighton Schwartz Bloodstock said the filly would most likely be trained in Britain.

"Her sister has done well this year and she is by a popular sire, who has done well," said Creighton. "Let's hope it all adds up to her being a good filly on the track and eventually a broodmare, too. She is a lovely big filly and has a lot of quality. I think she is likely to be a mid-summer to back-end type.

"She is for a new client and will go into pre-training with my brother. I imagine she will stay in Britain to be trained."

Starspangledbanner, who stands at Rosemont Stud for a fee of $19,800 (inc GST), had three lots sell on Monday for an aggregate of 182,000gns.

At the close of trade, Tattersalls reported 122 lots sold for an aggregate of 3,986,300gns at an average of 32,675gns, while the median was 20,000gns. At the 2019 renewal 131 lots were sold for 4,149,500 at an average of 31,676gns and median of 25,000gns.

Action will back at Park Paddocks on Wednesday, when the Tattersalls December Foal Sale gets underway.
