A colt by Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) - who is out of a half-sister to ill-fated Group 1-winning Novara Park Stud-based sire Jakkelberry (Storming Home) - was the headline act at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale on Thursday after Gerard Lowry of Oneliner Stables, who was bidding online, secured the youngster for 170,000gns.

"He is a Sea the Stars colt out of a Dubawi mare, he has it on both sides and he comes from an outstanding family - two champion horses in the second dam. He has great movement, he is a lovely individual. He was our pick of the day so we are delighted to get him," explained Lowry, who was on the sale ground, but wanted to make use of the online bidding technology.

"All going well and with a bit of luck he will come back to Book 1 next year and he will do us proud. We have had luck before with Sea The Stars so it is going back to the well! It is big plus, too, that he has come out of Newsells – the farm is such a noted breeder and consignor. He has come off a great farm, and they have done a fantastic job with him."

Sea The Stars has been lucky for Oneliner before – in 2019 the family pinhooking business sold a colt by the sire out of Emreliya (Danehill Dancer) to Godolphin for 725,000gns at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in 2019.

Lowry said that when a pinhooker has had luck with a sire how much more likely he or she is to head back to buy one by the same stallion again.

"You understanding the stallion's stock and what his record is on the racecourse. You are watching the stock and know what they have coming up. It is a massive help and, if the stallion has been lucky for you, it is hard to go away from it. It was a big factor with this, the second big factor was being out of a Dubawi mare, and with a grand-dam by Barathea so you are getting Sadler's Wells over Urban Sea. It stacked up on a lot of fronts."

Catalogued as Lot 718 and offered by Newsells Park Stud, the colt is out of La Mortola (Dubawi).

La Mortola herself is out of Claba di San Jore (Barathea), who along with Jakkelberry also produced fellow elite level scorers Crackerjack King (Shamardal) and Awelmarduk (Almutawakel) as well as Listed scorers Kidnapping (Intikhab) and Joyful Hope (Shamardal).

"The colt was bred by Mr Graham Smith-Bernal,” Newsells Park stud’s Julian Dollar said. “He bought the mare with Jill Lamb a couple of years ago from Kiltinan. She had a very nice Frankel who sold well. Sadly, she then had a beautiful Kingman who died as a foal. This is a nice Sea The Stars, she is nice mare she has done him well. She is in-foal to New Approach.

"Mr Smith Brunel is a very nice man, he is new to the industry. He will race a few, and is wanting to breed as well and has a few mares boarding with us."

Overall on Thursday, 207 of the 247 foals offered were sold with the clearance rate standing at 84 per cent. The percentage sold was up on 2019 when 209 of the 266 lots offered were sold at a clearance rate of 79 per cent.

However, the aggregate of 7,014,800gns was down 18 per cent from the figure of 8,532,700gns a year ago. The average fell 17 per cent from 40,826gns a year ago to 33,888gns whilst the median was down 24 per cent to 25,000gns, from 33,000gns a year ago.

Overall on Thursday 11 lots sold for 100,000gns or more. The sale continues on Friday.
