Dubawi colts steal the show at Tattersalls

A pair of foals by the Darley stalwart make 1,300,000gns

Two colts by Darley superstar stallion Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) stole the show at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale with Godolphin paying an aggregate of 1,300,000gns for the two youngsters, with the most expensive of the pair a half-brother to Group 1 winner Skitter Scatter (Sact Daddy), who sold for 700,000gns. 

Catalogued as Lot 939 and offered by Airlie Stud, the colt is out of winning mare Dane Street (Street Cry), whose progeny is headed by the aforementioned Skitter Scatter, who won the 2018 Moyglare Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 7f). 

Dane Street herself is a half-sister to 2008 Dewhurst Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) winner and now sire Intense Focus (Giant’s Causeway), while this is the same family as dual Group 1 winner and sire Soldier Of Fortune (Galileo). 

"He is from a great nursery, he is by Dubawi who we absolutely love,” said Anthony Stroud, who signed the docket for Godolphin. “He is a very good looking, very athletic individual. In all these decisions, we are just trying to aim for quality."

A few lots later, Stroud was active again, going to 600,000gns for another colt by the Darley stalwart stallion from the draft of Luca and Sara Cumani’s Fittocks Stud draft. 

Catalogued as Lot 939 and bred by German breeder Gerhard Schoeningh, the colt is out of German Listed winner Baisse (High Chaparral), making him a half-brother to Best Of Days (Azamour), who took out the 2018 running of the Cantala Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), while he also dead-heated with Mask Of Time (Holy Roman Emperor) in the Coongy Handicap (Gr 3, 2000m) that year. 

Baisse herself is a half-sister to Group 3 scorer Azmeel (Azamour). 

"We are delighted with where she has gone, we are delighted with the underbidder, we are thrilled we are able to be here at the sale,” said Sara Cumani. 

"The two-year-old full-sister Summerland is with Charlie Appleby, the yearling [Nathaniel] is called Beau Rivage, but the owner has not decided where she is going into training yet, but she is gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous. The mare is in-foal to Frankel and going to Sea The Moon. She is a gorgeous mare and it is the only mare Gerhard Schoeningh has and she boards with us."

Overall on Friday 187 lots sold for 16,304,000gns, which was down five per cent from 2019 when 171 lots sold for 17,102,000gns. The average of 87,187gns was down 13 per cent from the figure of 100,012gns a year ago while the median of 58,000gns was down 11 per cent from 65,000gns last year.
