Winning Oasis Dream (Green Desert) mare Firelight proved popular on the first day of the Tattersalls December Mare Sale on Monday as Jill Lamb Bloodstock went to 330,000gns for the West Blagdon Stud consigned mare.

Catalogued as Lot 1334, the four-year-old mare was offered carrying a foal by Cambridge Stud shuttler Almanzor (Wootton Bassett) and she is herself a daughter of Listed-winning Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Freedom’s Light.

Freedom’s Light is a sister to fellow stakes winner Oh Beautiful, while she also counts Face Facts (Nathaniel) - who also won at Listed level - among her half siblings.

Further back this is the same family dual Group 2 winner Cassandra Go (Indian Ridge) - the dam of Halfway To Heaven (Pivotal) who in turn produced Group 1 winners Magical (Galileo) and Rhododendron (Galileo), while further back this is also the family of 2018 Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Cross Counter (Teofilo).

Mares by Oasis Dream will be well sort after with the Juddmonte Stud-based sire enjoying a successful year in terms of broodmare winners, with 19 of his daughters producing stakes winners, including Melbourne Cup winner Twilight Payment (Teofilo) and Sir Dragonet (Camelot), who won the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) and they are both out of daughters of the son of Green Desert (Danzig).

"Firelight is a lovely mare and she ticked a lot of boxes, a good race filly, a beautiful looker, and in-foal to Almanzor, whom we like a lot. I bought her for Graham Smith-Bernal, who has already got an Oasis Dream mare out of a Galileo mare.” said Lamb.

Last week's Smith-Bernal-bred and sold a Sea The Stars foal who was consigned by Newsells Park where the breeder boards his mares. The colt is out of Nadia Glory (Oasis Dream), who was bought by Lamb at the Tattersalls December Mare sale in 2018 for 240,000gns.

“We managed to sell her Sea The Stars colt foal for 170,000gns –maybe we'll look to go down that route again, if they will have us Almanzor is a very suitable cover, and the physical will suit her well. I loved the yearlings, they are really good solid, wonderful-looking horses."
