On paper Beach Frolic (Nayef) - the dam of superstar miler Palace Pier (Kingman) - looked to be the headline act of the Tattersalls December Mare Sale and she didn’t fail to disappoint when selling to Coolmore’s MV Magnier for 2,200,000gns on Tuesday in foal to Darley’s exciting shuttler Blue Point (Shamardal).

Palace Pier is the winner of the five of his six starts, headlined by victories in the St James's Palace Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) and Prix Jacques Le Marois (Gr 1, 1600m) which saw him crowned Cartier Horse Of The Year last week.

Catalogued as Lot 1731 and offered by Highclere Stud, Beach Frolic has produced two winners, including the aforementioned Palace Pier and Tatweej (Invincible Spirit).

Beach Frolic had already enjoyed success in the sales ring this year, when Jamie McCalmont went to 320,000gns her colt by Swettenham Stud shuttler Highland Reel (Galileo) at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, while she has a weanling by Cambridge Stud shuttler Almanzor (Wootton Bassett).

The mare is a half-sister to Group 2 winners Joviality (Cape Cross) and Bonfire (Manduro), whose three wins include the 2015 Grafton Cup (Listed, 2350m).

Newsells Park’s Julian Dollar kicked the bidding off at 1,000,000 guineas, and bids came from around the ring, as well as online, but Magnier, standing outside, was the successful purchaser.

"She is a lovely mare and she has already bred an exceptional racehorse, the yearling that Jamie McCalmont bought is a very nice horse, too,” said Magnier. “She is a special mare, they don't come up very often. I would say that we will cover her with Galileo. Palace Pier is a very special horse, an exceptional horse ,she is a good producer.

"Incredible the involvement from Floors and it is great to hear that they are keeping some mares, let's hope they have plenty of success again I also just like to say what amazing job Lady Carolyn Warren has done all the way through," added Magnier.

Highclere sold Palace Pier to John Gosden for 600,000gns at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in 2018 and Lady Carolyn Warren was effusive in her praise for the mare, adding she hoped she would produce another champion for her new owners.

"I am not normally emotional, but she was such an amazing mare and it has been such a story and long journey, John bought her grandmother for very little,” said Lady Carolyn. “The family has just given us so much pleasure, we just hope that Coolmore and the team will do it for them, that she will produce for them a champion, I am sure she will.

"For all the team at Highclere, who do such an amazing job, day in day out, every morning, all the care and all the attention She looked magnificent, it is for everybody."
