Who are your pick of the colts and why?
We have a quality line-up of colts across the board, by a great cross-section of sires including proven sires like Fastnet Rock (Danehill), Pierro (Lonhro), Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), Rubick (Encosta De Lago), American Pharoah (Pioneerof The Nile), Deep Field (Northern Meteor) and Zoustar (Northern Meteor), as well as exciting first crop sires like Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock), Churchill (Galileo) and Caravaggio (Scat Daddy). While it is hard to single out one colt in particular as a standout, there are a couple that have had significant pedigree updates recently.

Lot 462 is the Zoustar colt out of Lake Geneva (Fastnet Rock), while Lot 268 is the American Pharoah colt out of Ennis Hill (Fastnet Rock). Both Lake Geneva and Ennis Hill are full-sisters to this season’s highest-rated juvenile Acrobat, thus further enhancing the sire potential of these two quality colts.

Who are your pick of the fillies and why?
Similarly, we are also represented by an outstanding group of quality fillies at the Gold Coast in January. Amongst them are four exceptional Fastnet Rock fillies, including progeny of/or siblings to Silent Sedition (War Chant) (Lot 308), Valentia (Fastnet Rock) (Lot 805), Sweet Sanette (Jallad) (Lot 860) and Chianti (I Am Invincible). Fastnet Rock is a remarkable stallion, with a phenomenal 40 Group 1 winners and some of the fillies that he has produced in 2020 alone are VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Personal, four-time top-flight winner Avantage and Golden Gift (1100m)-winning two-year-old Sneaky Five. Despite being a great sire for many years, he is showing no signs of slowing down and is also doing a great job as a broodmare sire, with his daughters producing the likes of Gytrash (Lope De Vega) and Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega) amongst others. It is with good reason that we expect his fillies to be extremely well sought after.

How do you feel the 2021 sale will measure compared to previous renewals?
There is no reason to be anything but extremely positive about how the sale will measure up in 2021. The quality of the horses on offer is exceptional and the results of the graduates of the sale in recent years speaks for itself. We certainly hope that there is another Winx (Street Cry) or Vancouver (Medgalia d’Oro) in our 2021 draft.

How do you think the current COVID pandemic will affect the sale and what are the positives that have come about as a result of the pandemic?
In Australia we have been very fortunate to be able to continue racing and trading in a way that is very close to normal, which is something that most other industries have not had the luxury of being able to do. In the long run I think it will have a positive impact on our industry. These unprecedented times have meant that people have had to embrace new technologies. This has been evidenced by the success of online sales, our racing being broadcast to new markets and studs conducting virtual stallion parades, all of which have helped open up our industry to a wider audience. We would love to see as many international people there as possible, however if they are not able to attend the sale in person, there are many avenues available to them to be a part of the action.

What is the thing you like most about the Gold Coast Sale?
Many people would say the same thing, but it is a great opportunity to get up to the Gold Coast after a long breeding and foaling season to catch up with friends and clients from throughout the world. The Magic Millions team go above and beyond to ensure that everyone has a great week and everything runs smoothly and it is a time of the year that we all look forward to with great anticipation each year.
